Unit 1-Constructions
Constructing congruent segments using a compass:
Go to http://www.mathopenref.com/constcopysegment.html watch the video.
1. Begin with a line segment AB
2. Place the compass with the sharp
point on A and the pencil point on
B. This measures how the length
of the segment.
3. Without changing the compass,
place the sharp point on point X,
(be sure that X is not on segment
AB) and draw an arc with the
pencil point. Label both points X
and Y.
4. Using a straightedge, draw
segment XY. Use your ruler to
check for congruence.
1. Use a ruler to draw a 3 inch segment. Label the end points M and N. Copy
the segment using a compass and straightedge and label the endpoints R
and S. Explain how you used your tools to construct congruent segments.
2. Use a ruler to draw a 15 cm segment. Label the end points J and B. Copy
the segment using a compass and straightedge and label the endpoints T
and A. Explain how you used your tools to construct congruent segments.
3. Use a ruler to draw a 4 inch segment. Label the end points Q and S. Copy
the segment using patty paper, and label the endpoints F and L. Explain
how you used your tools to construct congruent segments.
4. Use a ruler to draw a 70mm segment. Label the end points Y and P. Copy
the segment using patty paper, and label the endpoints S and K. Explain
how you used your tools to construct congruent segments.
5. Create a segment and label it. Construct a congruent segment and label it.
Explain what tools you used to copy the segment and explain how you
copied it. Be sure to use vocabulary and correct math notation.
