Allied Wartime Conferences in World War II Where: Atlantic Charter USS Augusta, Newfoundland Casablanca, Morocco Tehran, Iran Yalta, USSR (aka Crimea Conference) Potsdam, Germany When: Aug. 9, 1941 Attendees: Churchill, FDR Main decisions: US would concentrate on defeating Germany; after war, self-­‐determination, freedom of seas, free trade Jan 14-­‐24, 1943 Churchill, FDR, Henri Giraud, de Gaulle demand unconditional surrender, send aid to USSR; invade Sicily; recognition of Free French under de Gaulle and Giraud Nov. 28-­‐Dec. 1, 1943 Churchill, FDR, Stalin Invasion of Normandy planned for May, 1944 (so-­‐called 2nd front). First time the Big Three met during war. Feb 4-­‐11, 1945 Churchill, FDR Stalin Germany divided into occupation zones, free elections in E. Europe; Soviets agree to enter war against Japan; creation of UN July 17-­‐ Aug. 2, 1945 Stalin, Churchill (then Attlee), Truman Statement of aims to partition Germany (demilitarize, denazify, democractize) and Berlin; reverse all German annexations and settle Germany’s eastern border; reparations for USSR from Germany (The US tested the atomic bomb July 16)
