MANUFACTURING
HIGHLIGHTS
™
The percentage share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from Manufacturing sector
to total GDP increased from 9% during 1950-51 to 15% during 2008-09 at constant
(1999-2000) prices. Whereas, the share of GDP of registered manufacturing was
3.9% and of un-registered manufacturing was 5.3% during 1950-51. In 2008-09 the
percentage share was 10.3% and 4.9% respectively, which means that share of
registered manufacturing went up almost 3 times whereas the share on account of
un-registered manufacturing declined over the years.

The percentage share of Gross Capital Formation (GCF) in Manufacturing to total
GCF was 15% in 1950-51 and reached upto 42% in 2007-08 at 1999-2000 prices.
Whereas, the percentage share of GCF of registered manufacturing sector at 19992000 prices more than doubled during the period of five and half decades i.e. it
increased
from
13.9%
during
1950-51
to
31.3%
during
2007-08. In case of un-registered manufacturing sector, the percentage share
showed significant increase from 1.3% during 1950-51 to 10.3 % during 2007-08.

The number of factories covered under Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) increased
from 81 thousand during 1976-77 to 140 thousand during 2005-06.

Number of workers in the major industry group at two digit level increased during the
years in industries of Textile followed by Food products and Chemicals and Chemical
Products.

The performance of Small Scale Industries (SSI) sector in terms of production
increased from Rs. 7200 crore in 1973-74 to Rs. 585112 crores during 2006-07.
™
The percentage share of export of manufactured products to total exports recorded
40% during 1970-71 which reached upto 64% during 2007-08 whereas, in case of
imports the percentage share of manufactured products to total imports ranged
between 21% to 25% during the same period.
