What is Iron stone? What is uses of iron stone? Ironstone is a form of sedimentary rock that has a wide variety of commercial and consumer uses. Sedimentary rocks are formed by the gradual accumulation of sand or other small particles over time. Eventually the compacted particles are turned to stone by a combination of heat and pressure. In the case of ironstone, the particles are iron, clay or sand. Ironstone is dark gray when first mined, but over time turns brown because of oxidation. Iron Extraction The primary industrial use of ironstone is in the extraction of iron. This is because about half the mass of ironstone is accounted for by iron atoms. The extraction process involves grinding down the ironstone and placing it in a blast furnace. Uses of Iron stone Ceramics Ironstone is used as part of ceramics, including the eponymous "ironstone china." Ironstone china was introduced in the early 19th century by potters keen to find a cheaper substitute for porcelain, which could only be manufactured out of rare clays. 1 Building Material Because of its aesthetic properties, ironstone has been used in the construction of buildings for a long time. Many churches in Leicestershire, England, are built of ironstone. Landscaping Ironstone is often used by landscapers in the construction of rockeries and water features because of its unique ruddy-brown coloring. Large amounts of ironstone are quarried for this purpose in Oxfordshire, England, among other locations.
