Pedigree symbols Common pedigree symbols A pedigree is a graphic representation of a family history. Although a family history may also be recorded in narrative or checklist format, the graphic pedigree allows providers to easily appreciate relationships between affected and unaffected individuals and the number of relatives with and without disease. The table below shows common pedigree symbols. Pedigrees should also include the date the pedigree was taken or updated and the provider’s name.
