Ocean Life Zones
Foldable
Intertidal Zone
Neritic Zone
Benthic Zone
Bathyal Zone
Abyssal Zone
1. Intertidal Zone
•
•
•
•
•
Between high and low tide lines
Changes a lot between water and dry land
Animals and plants to must be able to live without
water for periods of times
Also known as Littoral Zone
On the back side of the title flap: name 3 organisms
that live in this zone
2. Neritic Zone
• Coastal waters
• Plenty of sunlight = photosynthesis
• Low water pressure
• Constant temperature
• LOTS of organisms live here!
• Also known as Sublittoral Zone
• On the back side of the title flap:
name 3 organisms that live in this
zone
3. Benthic Zone
• The benthic zone is the bottom of the water.
Benthos refers to animals living in this zone (both
on and near the sea floor).
• The benthic zone of the ocean is varied in
topography
• On the back side of the title flap: name 3
organisms that live in this zone
Pelagic (Ocenic)Zone
• Means “open sea” (Greek = “pelagos”)
• Divided into Epipelagic, Mesopelagic
Bathyalpelagic and Abyssopelagic
based on sunlight
• Water is deeper here
• At the surface, there is lots of light
• Down below, the water gets colder
and the water pressure increases
• Bathyal and Abyssal are part of the
Pelagic Zone
Bathyal Zone
4.4.Bathyal
Zone
• Continental slope down to ~2000 m
• Pelagic
• At the bottom of this zone, there is no sunlight =
There are no plants that grow Harder for animals
to live here
• Also known as the Midnight Zone
• On the back side of the title flap: name 3
organisms that live in this zone
5. Abyssal Zone
• NO sunlight reaches this zone
5.
Abyssal
Zone
• Little food is available
– Some animals produce their own light
• Very high water pressure
• Water temperature is very low/cold
• On the back side of the title flap: name 3
organisms that live in this zone
Organisms of Each Ocean Life Zone
• Intertidal = hermit crab, sea star, mussels, sea
urchin, barnacles
• Neritic = Loggerhead sea turtle, mackerel, cod,
kelp, Bottlenose dolphin
• Benthic = sea urchins, sea cucumbers,
crustaceans (shrimp, crab), squid, octopus
• Bathyal = jellies, and crustaceans. Sperm
whales can dive down into this zone when
hunting giant squid.
• Abyssal = Deep Sea Anglerfish, Giant Squid,
Tripod Fish, Black Swallower
