SSP expanding garden program
New greenhouse should produce year-round
By Scott Cousins
[email protected]
ALTON — A sustainability grant
from Madison County Community
Development has allowed Senior Services Plus to add a 3,000-square foot
high tunnel greenhouse.
The new greenhouse will allow the
agency to increase its garden food production. While some of the vegetables
are sold through local vendors, most
ends up as part of the Meals on Wheels
program or meals at the center’s School
House Grille.
It should be up and running by the
end of October.
“We will be able to grow food all
year round, all organic,” said Executive
Director Jonathan Becker. “It kind of
mirrors our focus on providing affordable wellness to people as they age.”
Workers and volunteers were recently
pouring footings for the 30 x 90 foot
structure, located in the middle of the
garden between several raised beds.
The new greenhouse will feature five
85-foot rows.
The cost of the new greenhouse is
about $11,000. They have also received
a heater donated by a local nursery.
He said the garden program is special.
“There’s nobody else in the Midwest
that provides organic food to people
on Meals on Wheels or who come in
here,” he said. “We want people to have
access to organic food.”
The garden started in 2007.
“Basically as more of a hobby for
people who were no longer able to garden or didn’t have the space,” Becker
said. “We saw it as a way to provide
higher quality organic food to people
who don’t have access to it.”
He noted that locally grown foods as
become “a huge movement.”
There is also a very practical reason.
When he started in 2006 one in nine
senior citizens faced hunger, that number is now one in six.
“It’s actually getting worse,” he said.
This is the second major expansion
of the garden this year.

In April SSP expanded its garden
program with a new greenhouse and
more raised planting beds.
That greenhouse, which features

with a grant through Mid-America
Transplant Services, an organ donor
organization based in St. Louis.
“With our greenhouse we’ve been
doing hydroponics,” he said. “We’ve
been selling food to Grassroots Grocery
and we’ve been growing food to put
into the cafe.

What to expect
when expecting…
A new hip or knee
By Sue Walker
From birth to Zumba, health and
wellness education is available online,
through class, by book or manual, but
what do we really want when maneuvering through what to expect when expecting anything? Personal attention is what
we want.
Personal attention is what you can
expect at Alton Memorial Hospital
throughout your entire recovery and
rehabilitation toward wellness and
mobility after a total hip or knee
replacement.
Your surgeon will coordinate a surgery
date with you and our pre-admission
nurse who calls you prior to surgery
to schedule a Joint Wellness visit. The
Joint Wellness Center is located adjacent to the Human Motion Institute on
the ground floor of the Olin Wing. You
will check in at HMI and are personally
escorted to our Joint Wellness Center.
The HMI parking or valet parking are
available for your convenience.
The new Joint Wellness Center offers
one-on-one education and dialogue with
a nurse, pharmacist, and physical thera-
pist to successfully prepare you and your
joint coach for what to expect with your
new hip or knee replacement.
We cover what to expect right before
surgery, during surgery, right after
surgery, pain management, equipment
management, and physical therapy
throughout the continuum of your
recovery from hospital all the way
through outpatient physical therapy.
We individually discuss any specific
questions or concerns you may have.
Personal attention.
During your Joint Wellness visit, we
can also draw labs and do an EKG if
ordered by your physician; one stop, one
location, for your convenience.
What to expect from Alton Memorial
Hospital throughout your entire recovery and rehabilitation toward wellness
and mobility after a total hip or knee
replacement? Personal attention because
it is the heart and soul of genuinely
excellent care.

Adult Day Services Week (Sept. 19-23),
celebrated at Adult Day Services, located on the campus of OSF Saint Clare’s
Hospital at 915 East Fifth Street.
Recognized in September of each
year, Adult Day Services Week gives the
staff of Adult Day Services a chance to
offer their participants additional social
activities – on an already busy slate
of events and speakers offered each
month.
Opened in 1986 and celebrating its
30-year anniversary this year, OSF Saint
Anthony’s Adult Day Services provides
daily care, activities and transportation
for participants, with varying degrees of
dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Various educational and support services
are also provided to the families and
caregivers of the participants.
As the area’s only hospital-based,
medically-supervised facility of its
kind, participants are able to receive
physician-ordered therapies and have
their medications administered by a
staff nurse. The program is designed to
provide caregivers a safe, friendly atmosphere for their loved one to visit, while
the caregiver goes to work, runs errands
or just takes some time for themselves.
Private pay is an option for half or
full days, and some long-term insurance
policies offer reimbursement. TheIllinois Department of Rehabilitation offers
assistance to qualified participants
under 60 years-old and the Department
on Aging offers assistance to qualified
participants more than 60 years.
Adult Day Service also offers a
monthly support group on the last
Thursday of each month. The free
support group is open to the public
whether a family member is in the
program or not.

SWANSEA — Southwestern Illinois
Development Authority (SWIDA), in
partnership with Bywater Development
Group and Bi-State Development (BSD),
is pleased to announce a new, $10.5 million development that will bring senior
apartment living adjacent to the Swansea
MetroLink Station in Swansea, Ill. The
transit-oriented development (TOD) project, which will be developed by SWIDA
and Bywater, was approved by the Illinois
Housing Development Authority (IHDA)
in Chicago on September 16.
This new development, called Metro
Landing of Swansea, will feature a handsome three-story building with 62 affordable one- and two-bedroom apartments
for older adults seeking an independent
lifestyle. Located adjacent to the Swansea
MetroLink Station, residents will have
car-free transportation options via MetroLink and MetroBus to conveniently access
restaurants, retail, entertainment venues,
recreational locations, employment centers,
and medical facilities around the bi-state
region. The Swansea Station is located on
the Metro East Park and Recreation District BikeLink trail system, so seniors will
be able to utilize the trail for exercise and
recreation.
This development would not have
occurred without the collaboration of a
number of groups including IHDA, the
St. Clair County Transit District and the
Village of Swansea. The Village has been a
vital asset in the predevelopment planning
process. “It is truly an example of how public and private partnerships can lead to an
important community investment,” James
Nations, SWIDA’s Chairman said. “This is
an excellent opportunity for SWIDA and
Bywater Development Group to contribute
to active senior housing as this segment
of the population continues to grow.” The
SWIDA Board of Directors is seeking other
markets in the region in need of comparable
developments.
Mike Lundy, Executive Director of
SWIDA said, “It has been great working
with Bi-State Development. We are very
pleased with the new senior housing development and worked extremely hard to
move this development forward.”
“This new development to be positioned
next to the Swansea MetroLink Station
reflects other successful transit-oriented
projects in our area, and is a testament
to the positive benefits the Metro transit
system brings to the region,” said John
Nations, President and CEO of Bi- State
Development (BSD). BSD operates the
metro public transportation system for the
St. Louis region.
“Metro Landing of Swansea is reflective of a very strong and effective public/
private partnership and stands to serve as
a model for transit oriented senior housing.
It will create both a positive impact on the
community and an ideal living environment for its residents. Our organization is
highly honored to be a part of this collective
effort,” said Aaron Burnett, President of
Bywater Development Group.

Those overpayments have allowed MA plans to

Cedarhurst breaks ground on new facility in Bethalto
For the Telegraph
BETHALTO — Cedarhurst Assisted Living and
Memory Care broke ground on its newest senior living
community with a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 14.
Cedarhurst of Bethalto will be a 62,476-square-foot
assisted living and memory care community located
on N. Moreland Road in Bethalto. It is being developed by Clayton-based Dover Development, which
focuses on seniors’ housing and healthcare properties.
Planning and zoning work is in progress. It will be
constructed by Brahms Construction, a full-service
construction management firm, also based in Clayton.
Brahms anticipates construction to be completed by
fall 2017.
Cedarhurst of Bethalto will contain 50 assisted living apartments and, in addition, a secure Memory
Care wing, which will accommodate up to 26 residents
with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
All assisted living apartments will have their own
bathrooms and kitchenettes, restaurant-style dining,
and access to the Cedarhurst movie theater, salon,
activities room, library and therapy facility.
In Cedarhurst’s Memory Care, residents’ lives will
be filled with fun and challenging activities, good food,
and person-directed care.
All Cedarhurst residents will have a customized
individual care plan to suit their unique needs, including assistance with medications, bathing and personal
care. Outdoor amenities include a 1.5-acre fishing
pond, indoor courtyards with raised bed flower and
vegetable gardens, and a walking path around the

cash-strapped seniors.
Premiums for Medigap policies are often higher, but
people who have traditional Medicare and a Medigap
policy face no restrictions on what doctors they can
use. MA plans require seniors to use only providers in
the insurers’ network. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation study of 20 counties found that on average MA
plans included only about half of the area hospitals in
their networks; 40 percent of the plans did not include
a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.
MA plans come with high out-of-pocket maximums

maximum could be as high as $6,700. Also, seniors

entire community. Apartments will be available to rent
monthly, with no need for an expensive “buy-in” or
endowment.
“Cedarhurst of Bethalto furthers our strategy of
developing a network of private-pay, assisted living
and memory care facilities from Southern Illinois
through the Metro East and up through Central Illinois,” Dover’s Chief Executive Officer Joshua Jennings
said.
Jennings’ private equity firm, Dover Capital, will
also have a majority ownership stake in the project.
“Bethalto is one of the last remaining market opportunities for ground up development in the Metro East
and rounds out our portfolio there very well. We can’t
wait to be a part of the community,” Jennings noted.
All Dover facilities are operated by Cedarhurst Living LLC, a Clayton, Missouri-based healthcare operations firm.
are sometimes surprised to learn that they are on the
hook for 20 percent of the cost of expensive chemotherapy drugs until they reach the out-of-pocket limit.
Too many sales people gloss over this crucial point.
While there is no limit on out-of-pocket spending for those in traditional Medicare, many seniors
buy Medigap plans that limit their exposure to high
out-of-pocket costs.
During open enrollment people already covered by
a Medicare Advantage plan can choose a different MA
plan. Seniors enrolled in traditional Medicare with
a Medigap can also switch to an MA plan. But later
on if they don’t like their MA plan, their options are
limited.
Here’s the catch. They can always return to traditional Medicare during open enrollment, but they
can’t always get a Medigap to cover the gaps. That
depends on their state. Some allow people to buy
“Cedarhurst of Bethalto is a perfect opportunity
to utilize our marketing and operational scale in the
Metro East — a network that ultimately benefits our
residents, their families and our employees,” Cedarhurst Living co-owner and President Josh Stevens
said. “Although new development opportunities like
Cedarhurst of Bethalto are becoming more scarce
in the Metro East, we will continue to leverage our
success into other growth opportunities, including
strategic acquisitions, the integration of additional
healthcare services into our platform and third-party
management opportunities for other successful owners
of senior living and long-term care communities.”
Dover Development LLC and Dover Capital LLC
are focused on developing, building, financing and
owning high-quality assisted living and memory care
facilities. Dover owns five currently operating assisted
living and memory care facilities, with two under construction and four scheduled to begin construction in
2017.
Cedarhurst Living operates high-quality seniorliving communities in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas.
Cedarhurst Living and its 500-plus team members are
experts in the social model of assisted living, including
assisted living-modeled Alzheimer’s and memory care,
and the value it brings to seniors and their families.
Each Cedarhurst Living is a community with the
mission of being the best place a senior has ever lived.
Cedarhurst accomplishes this by relying on a set of
core values to support a positive culture of caring,
respect and authenticity.
Medigaps after returning to traditional Medicare.
Others don’t.
Research shows that very little is really known
about how MA plans care for people who become
seriously ill or who need specialty care, says Tricia
Newman, senior vice president of the Kaiser Family
Foundation. Healthy 65-year-olds don’t always think
about that possibility at an insurer’s sales event. She
added seniors who opt for Medicare Advantage plans
when they first go on Medicare may be making an
irrevocable decision by giving up their right to
purchase supplemental insurance later in life.
If you’re not sure of your options, it’s best to
contact your state’s State Health Insurance Assistance
Program (SHIP) for help understanding the costs and
benefits of the different options.
