World Factbook GeoDatabase 2010 In This Document Introduction Features Installation Licensing Sample Projects and Layers Detailed Data Documentation Introduction The World Factbook GeoDatabase 2010 provides in tabular and GIS form the most commonly used numerical information from the online version of The World Factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook) as of June 24, 2010, along with the geographic layers needed to create thematic maps of the data in ESRI’s popular ArcMap series of products. Features Tabular data and geographic features packaged in a Microsoft Access file structured as an ESRI personal geodatabase The data table may be used with any database system capable of opening Access 2003 .mdb files Geographic features may be used in any GIS system supporting the ESRI personal geodatabase format. All data from rank order tables is included, along with selected numerical data from field lists Dates and notes accompanying data in field lists are preserved ArcGIS layer files and sample projects provided for a choropleth (colored area) representation of each data variable We are open to suggestions of additional data from the field listing to be included in future releases. To be considered, field listings must have the following properties: Must be useful for thematic mapping, i.e., must contain either quantitative (numeric) or categorical (falling into not more than a few tens of distinct classes) data The quantitative or categorical data must be separable from notes or other text by some reasonably straightforward method Please direct suggestions for additional field list data or other comments about this data set to Bill Dickson, [email protected] Installation The World Factbook Geodatabase is compressed in setup.exe in the downloadable zip file or CD-ROM, which must be executed on a Windows system. Setup.exe will prompt for an installation password, which is provided by the WorldGeoDatasets.com store on the download page and confirmation email. It is recommended, but not required, that the dataset be installed in the same folder as other WorldGeoDataSets.com data. Licensing This data set is covered by an End-User License, and is subject to both copyright and license restrictions. In particular, redistribution of the data is not allowed except as specifically permitted in the End User License Agreement or by explicit, prior, written permission of Global Mapping International. Sample Projects and Layers Sample ArcMap 3.3/10.0 compatible map projects for 20 of the most commonly-used variables from the Factbook are installed the Projects folder (by default c:\GMI_geodata\projects\Factbook). A layer file in the same directory provides an attribution statement including the release year of the Factbook data drawn from the geodatabase; this layer may be added to any map project containing Factbook data. ArcMap 3.3 layer (.lyr) files giving a reasonable choropleth representation of nearly all of the primary data variables are included in the main geodatabase directory (by default c:\GMI_geodata\Factbook). These may be added to any user map design where Factbook data is desired.
