RHODE ISLAND Rhode Island Cancer Registry Implementing Rapid Case Ascertainment NATIONAL PROGRAM OF CANCER REGISTRIES SUCCESS STORY Public Health Problem: The established data collection process used by the Rhode Island Cancer Registry (RICR) meets the timeliness standard of the National Program of Cancer Registries. However, this standard does not meet the growing demand for more current data. Use of Surveillance: RICR data is used by the Rhode Island Department of Health for surveillance of statewide cancer incidence as well as strategic planning for resource manangement and to measure the success of ongoing cancer related public health initiatives. Surveillance data is also used by hospital administrations for planning purposes and researchers using cancer data for ongoing research projects. Collaboration: RICR staff are active members of the Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode Island. The Partnership is the state’s CDC funded statewide Comprehensive Cancer Control Program organization. The Partnership is responsible for the development and implementation of the states cancer control plan. Cancer registry staff serve on various committees and chair the Data and Evaluation and Treatment workgroups. Cancer registry staff have also served as Chair of the Partnership. Public Health Outcome: Recognizing the need for more current cancer incidence data, cancer registry staff serving as Chair of the treatment workgroup included the goal of implementing Early Case Capture to meet the needs of data users and to create a pool of cancer patients who could potentially benefit from inclusion in clinical trials.
