Graphing Inequalities
Graphing Inequalities
 If
you can graph a straight line, you can graph an
inequality.
 To
graph an inequality, we have to start by graphing
the corresponding straight line. Then there are 2
steps:
1.
Type of Line
2.
Direction of Shading
Example 1: Graph the Equation
y = 3x – 1
Steps for Graphing an Inequalities
Solve the equation for “y” (if necessary).
2. Graph the equation as if it contains an = sign.
LINE
Draw the line SOLID if the inequality is < or >.
Draw the line DASHED if the inequality is < or >.
SHADING
Shade ABOVE the line if the inequality is > or >.
Shade BELOW the line if the inequality if < or <.
1.
Graph the Inequalities
y < 3x – 1
y < 3x – 1
Graph the Inequalities
y > 3x – 1
y > 3x – 1
Example 2: Graph the Inequality
y < 2x + 3
Example 3: Graph the Inequality
y > 2/3x- 2
What is the inequality is not in slope
intercept form?
If the inequality is not in slope-intercept form,
solve for y. Then graph like normal!
 1. 2x + 3y > 6
2. 5x – 4y > 8


3y > -2x + 6
-4y > -5x + 8
y > -2/3x + 2
y < 5/4x - 2
What happens when you multiply or divide by a
negative? INEQUALITY FLIPS
Example 4: Graph the Inequality
2x < -2y + 4
2x + 2y < 4
2y < -2x + 4
y < -1x + 2
Example 5: Graph the Inequality
𝑥 ≤ −1
