Study Guide for Chapter 4 “Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures”, Chapter 11 “Atoms and Chapter 12 “The Periodic Table” Be able to define: Element, atom, pure substances, metals, nonmetals, metalloids, compound, mixture, evaporation, filtration, electrolysis, distillation, centrifuge, solution, solute, solvent, concentration, solubility, suspension, colloid, chemical symbol, atomic mass number, atomic number, heterogeneous mixture, homogeneous mixture, periodic table, properties, group, period, and reactivity. Know the following: -An atom is the smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still be the same substance. -A substance in which all the particles are alike is a pure substance. -An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into anything simpler by physical or chemical means. -Each element as a unique set of physical and chemical properties. Know the properties -Elements are classified as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids, based on their properties. -A compound is a pure substance composed of two or more elements chemically combined. -Each compound has a unique set of physical and chemical properties that are different from the properties that composed it. -The elements that form a compound always combine in a specific ratio according to their masses. -Compounds can be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes. -A mixture is a combination of two or more substances, each of which keeps its own characteristics. -Mixtures can be separated by chemical means, such as filtration and evaporation. -The components of a mixture can be mixed in any proportion. -A solution is a mixture that appears to be a single substance but is composed of a solute dissolved in solvent. -Solutions do not settle, cannot be filtered, and do not scatter light. -Concentration is a measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent. -Suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures that contain particles large enough to settle out, be filtered, block or scatter light. -Colloids are mixtures that contain particles too small to be settled out, or to be filtered but large enough to scatter light. -Mendeleev developed the first periodic table. -Describe how elements are arranged on the periodic table. -Compare metals, nonmetals, and metalloids based on their properties and location in the periodic table. -Describe the difference between a period and a group. -Remember your project element information. (Atomic name, symbol, atomic number, group number, family name & members, mass number, and properties)
