CHAPTER 14: Lesson 2: Marijuana and other illegal drugs MARIJUANA Marijuana- dried leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, called cannabis sativa. Pot, Weed, Grass, Herb are some nicknames Illegal drug that is usually smoked. Effects of Marijuana THC- main active chemical in marijuana. THC alters the way the brain processes sensory information. People experience a pleasant sensation for a short while. It is also impossible to know what other harmful substances may be mixed in with marijuana. SHORT AND LONG TERM EFFECTS Short Term Effects Reduces reaction time and coordination, and impairs judgment. High doses can cause anxiety and panic attacks. Long Term Effects Users are at risk of same lung diseases that tobacco users confront, including cancer. Depression, anxiety, and personality disturbances which can cause users to fall behind in school or at work. Loss of motivation with continued use can cause problems with friends and family members. SAFETY RISKS Users are at risk of getting arrested. Impaired reaction time and coordination can make driving very dangerous. Marijuana effects judgment and cause teens to use other substances. Marijuana and Addiction Can develop a tolerance to the drug, which can lead to physical dependency and addiction. Each year more than 120,000 people seek treatment for addiction to marijuana. CLUB DRUGS Drugs that are used at dance clubs and raves. Hallucinations, paranoia, and amnesia are among the harmful effects. Amnesia- partial or total loss of memory. When mixed with alcohol, the effects of both substances are increased and unpredictable. Two forms of club drugs: Ecstasy Date rape drugs ECSTASY (MDMA) Synthetic chemical created in illegal labs. Affects the user like a hallucinogens an stimulants. It speeds up the central nervous system. Most of the time users do not know what is in the drug. Taken in pill form. Some users will feel energized, happy and relaxed, while others become nervous and agitated. (last about 3-6 hrs) ECSTASY AFTER EFFECTS Sadness, depression, and memory problems can last for several days or longer. Effects within 30 minutes: Increased heart rate Nausea Dizziness Chills Sweating Loss of appetite Feelings of well being Increased sense of confidence Elevated blood pressure ECSTASY DATE RAPE DRUGS Rohypnol, commonly called roofie, is a club drug that works by suppressing the CNS. Colorless, odorless, and tasteless that comes in pill form and leads to drug slipping. Produces amnesia, so the person who has taken it often has no memory of what happened. GHB is another depressant of the CNS. Comes in liquid form and is also linked with sexual assault. Ketamine called Special K is an anesthetic Snorted or sprinkled on tobacco or marijuana White powder can cause hallucinations, memory loss, and severe breathing problems- even respiratory failure. DRUG SLIPPING TEENS AND STEROID USE Steroids will cause acne of the face, make your hair fall out, and stunt your growth. Cause people to become very angry and violent (roid rage) When hormone levels are not balanced, problems with the development of female and male characteristics can occur. Boys can grow breasts and girls can develop mustaches or beards. ANABOLIC STERIODS Anabolic steroids- synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones. Help build muscle mass and enhance the development of male characteristics. Generally abused by athletes to improve their performance but can be used by anyone. Effects: Liver tumors, cancer, jaundice, high blood pressure, kidney tumors, severe acne, and trembling. Males- shrinking of testicles and breast development Females- growth of facial hair, menstrual changes, and deepened voice.
