Types of Stem Cells
• Embryonic stem cells
• Inner cell mass (~30 cells) of the blastocyst (~150 cells)
• First 3-4 days after fertilization
• Pluripotent - Can form all tissue types & organs
• Adult stem cells
• Small populations retained in various tissues & organs
• Unipotent – can form only 1 cell type
• Multipotent – can form into a limited # of differentiated cell types
• Induced pluripotent stem cells
• Retrieved from adult differentiated cells
• Genetically reprogrammed to mimic embryonic stem cells
