Jesus the Grace of God December 27, 2015 Titus 2.1-15 A. Paul exhorts Titus to preach that people live in such a way that sound doctrine stands out 1. 2.1 2. The word “become” means “stand out” 3. The word doctrine refers to that which is taught—the Bible B. So there is an exhortation C. Then follows the explanation. Titus 2.2-10 1. For all genders and all ages. 2.2-6 2. For Titus himself. 2.7-8 3. For servants. 2.9-10 D. Nothing really “spectacular.” 1. “Put sound doctrine on display.” 2. Sound doctrine looks like a good work ethic, a good marriage, financial honesty, right thinking about God and this life, etc E. Good Christianity is not really defined by 1. “Surrendering to full time service” 2. “Quantity”: number of souls won, number of hours in prayer, etc. F. Then follows the motivation. 2.11-14 1. Jesus Christ, the Grace of God, has appeared i. His appearing was an epiphany—a sudden and clear appearing ii. This is the grace of God as historical fact 2. Jesus Christ, the Grace of God, has trained us to be zealous for good works i. This training didn’t come in the form of a lecture ii. It came in the form of a demonstration iii. Jesus denied (disregarded) worldliness and ungodliness in His own life iv. This is the grace of God in present tense 3. To live like this IS what it means to be “looking for that blessed hope” (2.13) 1. The blessed hope is also the glorious appearing of Christ. 2. We are awaiting another epiphany of Christ 3. This is future grace—and glory 4. So, the grace of God given to us in the Person of Christ ignites good works in the lives of believers 5. This is to said, to be encouraged, to be corrected, and to be treated as a mandate from God. 2.15
