ATMOSPHERE AND CYCLES HOW WAS THE ATMOSPHERE CREATED? • Early in Earth’s life carbon dioxide and other gases were released from volcanic eruption. • The gases released from these volcanic eruptions created our early atmosphere. • The two main gases that compose our lower atmosphere are Nitrogen and Oxygen Video The movement of carbon between the atmosphere and living organisms. • Carbon enters the atmosphere by: • • • • Forest fires Factories Animal respiration Volcanic eruptions • Carbon is removed from the atmosphere by: • Photosynthesis of plants • Photosynthesis of phytoplankton CARBON CYCLE Video Movement of water between air, surface, and oceans. • Precipitation: Water moves from the air to the surface. Ex: rain • Evaporation: Water moves from the surface to the air. Ex: steam • Condensation: water vapor changes to liquid water droplets. ex: clouds • Transpiration: evaporation of water from plants. • Runoff: excess water flows over Earth’s surface WATER CYCLE AKA HYDROLOGICAL Video The biological and chemical processes by which nitrogen is converted to different chemical states • Lightening creates soil nitrates • Nitrogen goes from atmosphere to soil • Bacteria change matter into nitrogen compound. • Bacteria “fix” nitrogen • Plants obtain nitrate ions from soil and water NITROGEN CYCLE
