The Cuban Revolution By Sophie and Devon Causes of the Revolution • Fulgencio Batista- the corrupt and brutal Cuban dictator • Capitalism- Economic system based on individual wealth and private property for profit of the owner • Ché Guevara worried that the harsh government and economic system was down grading poor citzens • Anti-American feelings War history Resentment towards U.S control Imperialistic attitude Important Dates and Events • October 9th, 1697- assassination of Ché Guevara • March 17th, 1958- Fidel Castro calls for a general revolt • November 1954- Batista dissolves parliament and is elected constitutional president • July 1953- The assault on the Moncada Barracks Leader/Important People of the Revolution • Fidel Castro- led the Revolution • Ché Guevara- Co-led the Revolution • Flugencio Batista- Dictator of Cuba before the Revolution Results of the Revolution • Things didn’t go as planned in Cuba, leaders got more harsh rather than more relenting. • The lower class citizens actually risked their lives in an attempt to flee the country. Long Lasting Effects of the Revolution • Government became more harsh • Communist nation was 90 miles off the coast of Florida • Their allied country of the Soviet Union tried to sneak nuclear missiles into Cuba threatening America Cuban Revolution Video • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyqJkhGofGY Group Reflection In our opinion, the Revolution was not a success. Not only did the aspect of society Ché Guevara was trying to change get worse, some people actually died due to the harsh and absolute government change. They changed from the capitalist government they once had to the rigid authority of Communism, an economic system where the government has control over all of the country’s money. Cuba then united with the Soviet Union making them a Soviet State. This was bad news for America, as Cuba is only 90 miles off the coast of Florida, of course resulting in the Cuban Missile Crisis, where the Soviet Union attempted to sneak nuclear missiles into Cuba. This government change was in no way better for Cuba, thus supporting our decision that the Revolution would’ve been better off not happening even if they already had a corrupt harsh leader. Thank You!!! • MKAY BYE!!! • Sincerely, Sophie and Devon
