LONDON
 London is the capital of the U.K.
 London is also the capital of England.
 London is a cosmopolitan city, there are people
of many nationalities.
 Population is about 7 million inhabitants.
 London is situated on the Thames.
 London is the centre of cultural, political and
social activities.

History
 The city was founded 2,000 years ago.
 43 AD - London was the setlement of The
Romans, they called it Londinium.
 1066 - William the Conqueror came to England
after the famous battle of Hastings.
 1599 – William Shakespeare had opened a
theatre – The Globe.
 1665 – London survived plague.
 1666 – The Great Fire of London, two thirds of
the city were destroyed.

London transport is one of quite high quality.

Sightseeing in London
 There are many places of interests:
 Tower of London
 It was built by W. the Conqueror. It was once a
royal palace, then a prison and fortress. It's a
museum now. The Crown Jewels are kept there.
 It is guarded by Beefeaters
Tower Bridge
 The Tower Bridge is
a great symbol of
London.
 It is the best known
of all the bridges
spanning the
Thames.
 The bridge opens in
the middle and goes
up when huge ships
want to pass
through.
St. Paul‘s Cathedral Westminster Abbey
 Is one of the largest in
the world.
 It was built by Sir
Christopher Wren after
the Great fire of London.
 The royal wedding
ceremonies are held
there. For example:
Prince William and Kate
Middleton had their
wedding there.
 Many famous people are
buried there
 English kings and
queens have been
crowned here and
many of them are
buried here.
 Inside there is the
well known Poets
Corner.
The Houses of
Parliament
 The Houses of Parliament
are the seat of Parliament.
 The business of Parliament
takes place in two places,
the House of Commons
and the House of Lords.
 Parliament exists to
challenge the work of
government, approve new
laws and debate
government policy and
current issues.
Big Ben
 It is the famous clock tower
and its characteristic bell
ringing.
 It is called after Sir
Benjamin Hall, one of the
ministers.
 He was called Big Ben by
people.
 The strike of Big Ben is
used by BBC as a time
signal.
Trafalgar Square
 A high column with
Nelsons statue stands in
the middle of the square.
 It is also very popular
place for demonstrations
and meetings.
 At Christmas time a big
decorated Christmas tree
stands there.
Piccadilly Circus
 There are London best
known theatres and
cinemas,
the
most
famous restaurant and
night-clubs.
 There is a statue of
Eros, the Greek god of
Love.
Buckingham Palace
 Has become the
official royal
residence.
 Every midday the
Changing of the
Guard takes place.
Parks
 Hyde Park- is one of the largest parks in central London,
United Kingdom, and one of the Royal park of London,
famous for its Speakers‘ Corner.

 St. James‘s Park - park in the City of Westminster,
