Wiring Methods: Provide building wire for all locations unless otherwise specified. DESIGN REQUIREMENTS A. All drawings and specification sections apply to work in this section. Furnish all items, articles, materials, equipment, operations or methods that are mentioned, listed or scheduled on drawings or are in this specification including all labor, equipment, materials and miscellaneous incidentals necessary and/or required for the completion of this project. The work covered under this section of the specifications is in no way complete within itself but is supplementary to the entire specification and drawings. B. Conductor shall be copper unless explicitly approved by Owner. C. Indicated wire sizes are based on current, approved, NEC, voltage drop and no more than three conductors per raceway. Larger size wire may be required if the Contractor elects to use higher conduit fill or at his option may be used to utilize stock sizes. Raceway sizes shall be increased accordingly to conform to the current, approved, NEC requirements. Changes shall be approved by Owner. 1. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 2.2 Conductors A. Product Description: 1. Type THHN/THWN for all locations, unless noted or specified otherwise. 2. Type XHHW for all locations outside of the structure footprint. 3. Feeders, branch and control circuit wiring shall be Stranded conductor. 4. Power and lighting circuits shall not be smaller than 12 AWG unless otherwise specified. 5. 20 ampere, 120 volt branch circuits longer than 100 feet shall not be smaller than 10 AWG unless otherwise specified. 6. Control circuit wiring shall not be smaller than 18 AWG unless otherwise specified. B. Conductor: Copper. NONMETALLIC-SHEATHED CABLE A. Not permitted. Not allowed, except with explicit permission from Owner. 1. Allowed for final termination to vibrating mechanical equipment, less than 6 foot total length. B. Conductor: Copper. C. Insulation Voltage Rating: 600 volts. D. Insulation Temperature Rating: 90 degrees C. E. Insulation Material: Thermosetting. F. Armor Material: Steel. WIRING CONNECTORS A. Power Cable Lugs: 1. For #8 AWG through 12# AWG conductors, use seamless, tubular, tin or silver plated copper, with one hole in the tongue and designed for multiple facet single compression. 2. For #6 AWG and larger conductor, use seamless tubular, silver or tin plated copper, long barrel closed end, multiple compression, with one hole for #6 AWG to #2 AWG. Two-hole for #1 AWG and larger. (NEMA standard drilling unless otherwise specified.) 3. Splices and connections for #6 AWG and larger shall be manufactured with silver or tin plated copper. Multiple facet type multiple compression, long barrel type connectors. 4. Lugs for control wiring #14 AWG through #22 AWG shall be nylon insulated, silver or tin plated copper, multiple facet type single compression, ring tongue type. Lugs shall be of the manufacturer and type indicated listed in this section. Pre-insulated twist-on type connectors for #12 AWG and #10 AWG conductors splices and taps may be used at contractor’s option. Light pole bases shall utilize Polaris pre-terminated terminal blocks within base. B. Terminal Blocks 1. Terminal blocks shall be NEMA type, 600 volt, suitable for ring or spade lugs. C. Split Bolt Connectors: 1. Only to be used while bonding basket-style cable tray. Other uses require explicit approval from Owner. D. Solderless Pressure Connectors: 1. Spring Wire Connectors: a. Any manufacturer, excluding Skotchlok. 2. Compression Connectors: a. Owner preferred option. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 3.2 EXAMINATION A. Section 01 30 00 - Administrative Requirements: Coordination and project conditions. B. Verify interior of building has been protected from weather. C. Verify mechanical work likely to damage wire and cable has been completed. D. Verify raceway installation is complete and supported before installing conductors. PREPARATION A. 3.3 Completely and thoroughly swab raceway before installing wire. INSTALLATION A. Route wire and cable to meet Project conditions. 1. Routing shall be run orthogonal to building space. 2. Multi-wire branch circuits with shared neutrals are not permitted B. Neatly train and lace wiring inside boxes, equipment, and panelboards. C. Cables shall be continuous between terminations unless otherwise specified on the Drawing. If splices are necessary, the method and location shall be approved by the Owner or Owner’s Representative. D. Wire in Raceway: 1. Pull all conductors into raceway at same time. Make all splices in a junction box, never inside conduit or panelboards, MCCs, switchgear or similar equipment. No more than 6 single phase branch circuits in a single conduit. E. Cable: 1. Protect all exposed cable from damage in accordance with Section 26 05 33. 2. Support cables above accessible ceiling, from building structure. a. Attach to building by means of listed and labeled components. b. Do not rest cable on ceiling panels. c. Do not attach cables to ceiling suspension system by means of plastic ties or spring clips. 3. Use suitable cable fittings and connectors. F. Controls cables: 1. Fire Detection system: a. Color of outer sheath: Red. b. For the low voltage portion of the fire alarm system, install 16 AWG conductors (minimum) for signature loop and 14 AWG conductors (minimum) for signal circuits. Conductors shall have 75 degree C insulation for wet, damp, or dry locations. c. All cable shall be rated for the environment where it shall be used: Power limited fire-protective signaling cable classified for fire and smoke characteristics, copper conductor, 300 volts insulation rated 105 degrees C. G. Wiring Connections: 1. Clean conductor surfaces before installing lugs and connectors. 2. Make splices, taps, and terminations to carry full ampacity of conductors with no perceptible temperature rise. 3. Tape uninsulated conductors and connectors with electrical tape to 150 percent of insulation rating of conductor. 4. Install compression type connectors for copper conductor splices and taps, 8 AWG and larger. 5. Install insulated spring wire connectors with plastic caps for copper conductor splices and taps, 10 AWG and smaller. 6. Install Polaris pre0insulated terminal blocks at all light pole bases. H. MC cable shall only be used for: 1. Final termination to equipment and devices less than 6’ in length 2. A manufacturer’s lighting modular wiring system may be used throughout a room or other defined space. 3. Other uses require explicit permission from Owner WIRE COLOR A. Identify and color code wire and cable under provisions of Section 26 05 53. Identify each conductor with its circuit number or other designation indicated. Inspect wire and cable for physical damage and proper connection. B. Measure tightness of bolted connections and compare torque measurements with manufacturer's recommended values. C. Verify continuity of each branch circuit conductor. D. Perform insulation testing on all feeders prior to energization. Resistance values shall be recorded and provided to Owner. 1. Gas & Electric generation and distribution sites shall have conductor tested upon delivery. Values shall be recorded prior to installing cable or wire in raceway.
