Chemical Bonds
Monday, November 28th, 2016
Why do we bond?
• The number of valence electrons determines
the types of bonds an atom will form
• Chemical bonds are an atom’s attempt to fill
an electron shell (get a stable octet)
Ionic Bond
• Usually forms
between a metal
and nonmetal
• Transfer of electrons
• Cation + Anion
Covalent Bonds
• Usually forms
between two
nonmetals
• Sharing of electrons
so both atoms get a
full octet
Metallic Bonds
• Usually forms
between two metals
• Holds metals
together very tightly
• Electron cloud with
high conductivity
