Born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18,
1918
 Joined the African National Congress in
1944

◦ engaged in resistance against the ruling
National Party's apartheid policies after 1948
 Nelson Mandela argued for the setting up of a
military wing within the ANC after the banning
of the ANC
◦ formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe
Background
Arrested in 1962 and jailed for 27 years
 Released on February 11, 1990.
 In 1991, at the first national conference of
the ANC held in South, Mandela was
elected President of the ANC
 Mandela led his party in the negotiations
that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994


he had a vision, to end the apartheid
policy, not only in South Africa, but
elsewhere too. Since he got into politics
very early, he gained some tough
experience or better say it was a 'long
walk to freedom'.

life. It creates an abundance of energy that sustain your actions. They
have this charisma and forcefulness that compels us to follow their
lead and do great things.

Undaunted, in 1994, 4 years after his release from prison, he
became the first democratically elected president of South Africa,

In prison, Mandela kept at his struggle and influenced greatly the
young black activist imprisoned in Robben Island, dubbed 'Mandela

'Not giving up' has a new meaning observing the life of Mandela.
When faced with challenges, he kept working and did not give up to
realize his dream, each time with new vigor, denying his enemy any
chance of crushing his spirit.

striving to attain the goals he and others had set out

– In 1991, at the first national conference of the ANC held

banned in 1960

friend and colleague, Oliver Tambo, became the organisation's
National Chairperson.
