Lecture 3: Group Application Exercise This lecture was originally prepared by Dr. Kari Watkins, Georgia Institute of Technology; Dr. Jeff LaMondia, Auburn University; and Candace Brakewood, Georgia Institute of Technology as part of the STRIDE project Developing a New Course for Public Transportation Education (2012-029S). Putting Our Learning Into Practice… • In an urban environment, we simply do not have enough space to travel individually in cars. • Many different technologies exist, but technology should be the last decision not the first. • Proper planning, design and operations are necessary. • Transit must be given the highest possible ROW category to ensure personal mobility rather than vehicular mobility. Transit Planning, Design & Operations Consider Teton County, WY Transit Planning, Design & Operations Some Facts • Over 18,000 residents, 7,000 households • Over 400 square miles in size – Majority of development around Jackson • Contains – affluent Jackson Hole Skiing area – Grand Teton National Park – Yellowstone National Park • It has the highest personal per capita income in the US! • Most residents are very outdoorsy Transit Planning, Design & Operations Major Areas of Concern Transit Planning, Design & Operations Regional Connections Transit Planning, Design & Operations The Transportation System & Urban Areas Transit Planning, Design & Operations Household Distribution Number of Households in Census Blocks Highest Number High-Average Average Average-Low Lowest Number Transit Planning, Design & Operations Where Young Children Live Number of Children Under 18 in Census Blocks Highest Number High-Average Average Average-Low Lowest Number Transit Planning, Design & Operations Where Older People Live Number of People Older than 65 in Census Blocks Highest Number High-Average Average Average-Low Lowest Number Transit Planning, Design & Operations Jobs and Commercial Areas Transit Planning, Design & Operations Civic and Open Spaces Transit Planning, Design & Operations Requirements from the City Council • The transit system needs to provide access for residents AND tourists • Focus of the system should be – Circulating in the service areas – To National Parks & Metro Area • Funding will support 4 routes – Take advantage of this, choose 4 routes – You can do any mode for these routes Transit Planning, Design & Operations Your Task… • Develop a transit system for Teton County – As simple or complex as needed – Make it context-sensitive! • Refer to the handout – It asks the right questions Transit Planning, Design & Operations Instructions • Forms teams of 3 or 4 students • Review the county & its needs – http://www.tetonwyo.org/ – http://www.startbus.com/ • Create your own transit system • Complete the handout • Share results with the class Transit Planning, Design & Operations
