The Theater of Epidaurus
This section examines the purposes of Ancient Greek
drama.
 Describe what the Ancient Greek city-states were.
 Describe why Athens was important as a center of arts
and politics.
 Evaluate the original religious role of the plays.
This section focuses on how the performances were
staged.
 Describe the parts of the theater and stage itself.
 Explain the use of scenery, costumes and props,
including the famous masks.
 Evaluate the role of the Chorus and how it changed
over time.
This section evaluates Aristotle’s view of tragedy.
 Describe each part of the structure in a tragedy.
 List the characteristics of the tragic hero.
 Explain the ideas of catharsis, hamartia and hubris.
 This section will identify and describe the basic
elements of the story.
 Briefly describe the main characters/performers:
Chorus, Oedipus, Tiersias, Jocasta, Creon, the Priest,
and the Shepherd.
 Explain how fate and hamartia are important in the
play.
 Document all your resources for the assignment.
 Use at least two resources.
 At least one source should be a data base.
 No unapproved sources may be used. Do not use
Google, Wikipedia, etc.
