Jesus Shows Us God’s
Plan for Marriage
Divine Service II

God’s Word for Today: God’s plan for man was perfect. He
created woman for man. They were to “become one flesh”.
Sin entered the world and separation replaced union—
separation from God and from one another. Bitter marriages
and divorces are two examples. But thanks be to God, Jesus
even suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might
taste death for everyone and create new life and new promise
of union.
Holy Communion
“Personal Preparation for Holy Communion” is on page 156 of
the Christian Worship Lutheran Hymnal.
The Bible and Lutherans teach that Holy Communion is a holy
act instituted by Christ. Together with bread and wine we
receive Jesus’ true body and blood. In this special meal Jesus
gives the forgiveness of sins, strengthens our faith, and gives
eternal salvation to all who believe.
The Holy Spirit uses the Lord's Supper the same way he uses
the Word of God to maintain and strengthen our faith in
Christ.

Hymn 506, Oh, Blest the House, Whate’er Befall
Verse 1
Oh, blest the house, whate'er befall,
Where Jesus Christ is all in all!
A home that is not wholly his -How sad and poor and dark it is!
Verse 2
Oh, blest that house where faith you find
And all within have set their mind
To trust their God and serve him still
And do in all his holy will.
Hymn 506, Oh, Blest the House, Whate’er Befall
Verse 3
Oh, blest the parents who give heed
Unto their children's foremost need
And weary not of care or cost.
May none to them and heav'n be lost!
Verse 4
Blest such a house; it prospers well.
In peace and joy the parents dwell,
And in their children's lives is shown
How richly God can bless his own.
Hymn 506, Oh, Blest the House, Whate’er Befall
Verse 5
Then here will I and mine today
A solemn promise make and say:
Though all the world forsake his Word,
I and my house will serve the Lord!

DIVINE SERVICE II
STAND
M: In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy
Spirit.
C: Amen.
CONFESSION
M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and
confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ to forgive us.
C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.
For faithless worrying and selfish pride,
For sins of habit and sins of choice,
For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,
You should cast me away from your presence forever.
O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.
ABSOLUTION
M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his
great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we
were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his
called servant:
I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of
the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
LORD, HAVE MERCY
M: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.
For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may
receive from you all they need to sustain body and life,
hear our prayer, O Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
M: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the
world, that all who are lost in sin may be brought to faith
in you, hear our prayer, O Christ.
C: Christ, have mercy.
M: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not
lose the hope of heaven as we await your return, hear our
prayer, O Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy.
M: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you.
C: Amen.
GLORY BE TO GOD
1. All glory be to God on high!
Your name, O Lord, we glorify;
We praise you for your peace and grace,
Your favor toward our fallen race.
2. Our grateful thanks to you we bring,
For your great glory, heav’nly King,
For all, O Father, you have done
Through Jesus Christ, your only Son.
3. O Lamb of God, to you we pray.
You take all human sin away.
Have mercy, Lord; receive our prayer;
From God’s right hand, your mercy share.
4. You, Christ, are holy—Lord alone;
The Father’s glory you made known.
We by your Spirit sing again:
“All glory be to God!” Amen
THE WORD
SALUTATION
M: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: Let us Pray.
Almighty God, in your bountiful goodness keep us safe
from every evil of body and soul. Make us ready, with
cheerful hearts, to do whatever pleases you, through Jesus
Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON: Genesis 2:18-24
M: 18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man
should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19
Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every
beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and
brought them to the man to see what he would call
them. And whatever the man called every living creature,
that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock
and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the
field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for
him. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon
the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and
closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD
God had taken from the man he made into a woman and
brought her to the man.
FIRST LESSON: Genesis 2:18-24 (continued)
23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man
shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his
wife, and they shall become one flesh.

SECOND LESSON: Hebrews 2:9-11
M: 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower
than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and
honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the
grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it
was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things
exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the
founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For
he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have
one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them
brothers.
VERSE OF THE DAY:
M: Alleluia. I will proclaim your name to my people; in the
midst of the congregation I will praise you. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
M: The Gospel according to Mark 10:2-16
C: Glo – ry be to you, O Lord!
M: 2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked,
“Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He
answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4
They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of
divorce and to send her away.” 5 And Jesus said to them,
“Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this
commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation,
‘God made them male and female.’
GOSPEL: Mark 10: 2-16 (continued)
7
‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and
hold fast to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one
flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What
therefore God has joined together, let not man
separate.” 10 And in the house the disciples asked him
again about this matter. 11 And he said to them,
“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her
husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” 13
And they were bringing children to him that he might
touch them, and the disciples rebuked them.
GOSPEL: Mark 10: 2-16 (continued)
14
But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to
them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them,
for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to
you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a
child shall not enter it.” 16 And he took them in his arms
and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:
Praise be to you, O Christ!

Gracious Savior, gentle shepherd,
Children all are dear to you;
May your loving arms enfold them
In your care their whole life through.
Gently tend and safely keep them
In your mercy strong and true.

Tender Shepherd, never leave them,
Never let them go astray;
By your warning love directed,
May they walk the narrow way.
Thus direct them, thus defend them
Lest they fall an easy prey.
Hymn 508, Gracious Savior, Gentle Shepherd

By your holy Word instruct them;
Fill their minds with heav'nly light.
By your pow'rful grace convince them
Always to approve what's right.
Let them feel your yoke is easy;

Sermon
Hebrews 2:9-11
JESUS CALLS US HIS BROTHERS
1) He came as one of us (v. 9a)
Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left
nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see
everything in subjection to him. (Heb 2:8)
But we see him who for a little while was made lower
than the angels, namely Jesus. (Heb 2:9a)
There is one God, and there is one mediator between God
and men, the man Christ Jesus. (1 Ti 2:5)
4
When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his
Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem
those who were under the law, so that we might receive
adoption as sons. (Ga 4:4–5)
… in every respect Jesus has been tempted as we are, yet
he is without sin. (Heb 4:15)
For our sake God made him (Jesus) to be sin who knew no
sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of
God. (2 Co 5:21)
You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. (Le 19:2)
2) In order to die for us (vv. 9b, 10)
Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the
suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might
taste death for everyone. (Heb 2:9b)
The wages of sin is death (Ro 6:23)
Jesus was delivered up because of our trespasses and
raised because of our justification. (Ro 4:25)
20
God raised Jesus from the dead and seated him at his
right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and
authority and power and dominion, and above every name
that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to
come. (Eph 1:20–21)
For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all
things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make
the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.
(Heb 2:10)
Professor Balge; “The Hebrew Christians were tempted to
be offended by the fact that their Savior was put to death
on such a cruel, detestable instrument of torture such as
the cross. But they shouldn’t be, because even the way our
Savior died was part of God’s plan. God knew what he was
doing in sending his Savior to the cross.”
3) So that we could live eternally with him (v. 11)
For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all
have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call
them brothers. (Heb 2:11)
22
And if a man has committed a crime punishable by
death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,
23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you
shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by
God. (Dt 21:22–23)
And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear
the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they
believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. (Lk
8:13)
28
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill
the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and
body in hell. … 32 So everyone who acknowledges me
before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who
is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also
will deny before my Father who is in heaven. … 38 And
whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not
worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and
whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Mt
10:28,32-33,38–39)
Nicene Creed
STAND
A: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker
of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
(continued next page)
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light
from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father. Through him all things were
made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from
heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin
Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was
crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was
buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with
the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at
the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will
have no end. (continued next page)
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity
with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one
holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge
one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to
come. Amen.

And crown him Lord of all.
HYMN 370, All Hail The Power Of Jesus' Name
