• U.S and Soviet Union supported Iraq.
• - Both Super Powers needed oil to fuel their
economy.
• Surrounding Iraqi countries supported Iraq
Baath
• Established in the 1940s in Syria .
• Baath Party: Sudam Hussein was one of the founders and
enforcers of the Baath party. This was a socialist and
national group.
• Their prime goal was to overthrow what the members
saw as hopeless corrupt regime to colonialist powers.
• They violently overthrew the president using their
military forces. (Military Coup)
• Baathism was associated with radical Arab nationalism
