THE COLD WAR
QUOTE:
“FROM STETTIN IN THE BALTIC TO TRIESTE
IN THE ADRIATIC, AN IRON CURTAIN HAS
DESCENDED ACROSS THE CONTINENT.”
- WINSTON CHURCHILL
Objective:
Students will explain post-war tensions between the U.S. and
Soviet Union by detailing specific actions and events
State Standards: Strand 1 Concept 9 PO 1
The Cold War
■ As World War II was ending a huge distrust grew
between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. This distrust
will cause a growing tension that will lead to a period
of time called the Cold War.
Communism
■ Communist governments were created by the Soviet
Union in all of the Eastern European countries. Winston
Churchill referred to this as the “Iron Curtain”.
Containment
■ To counter this growing threat by the Soviet Union the U.S.
adopted a policy of containment. The US vowed to oppose
the spread of communism in the world.
Truman Doctrine
■ President Truman also declared that the U.S. would
support any nation that was resisting takeover by “armed
minorities or outside pressures.” This was known as the
Truman Doctrine.
Marshall Plan
■ Congress also passed the Marshall Plan. This plan
gave money to any European nation to help rebuild as
long as they removed trade barriers and cooperated
economically with each other.
Assignment
■ Why would it be beneficial to the United States to give away
over $12 billion to rebuild Europe? Think back to the
lecture and which countries received the money.
(1 paragraph)
■ After World War II, the U.S. said that they would contain
communism and not let it spread throughout the world. Was
it possible to contain communism? (1 paragraph)
