Located in Simcoe, Ontario, Norfolk General Hospital provides exceptional healthcare to a municipality of
approximately 69,000 people. Our area of focus provides a continuum of service throughout the life span of the
people we serve including Emergency, Critical Care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Medicine, Surgery, and Complex Continuing
Care. Employing approximately 550 highly skilled and dedicated employees, Norfolk General Hospital continues to be
a full service 106-bed hospital with round the clock on-call coverage of Specialists in Surgery, Anesthesia, Internal
Medicine, and Obstetrics, as well as on-site 24 hour per day medical coverage.
Simcoe is less than one hour away from most major centers, including Hamilton and London, and only 90 minutes
from the Greater Toronto Area. Situated in Norfolk County (Ontario’s South Coast), Simcoe is not far from Lake Erie
and the 88 miles of shoreline that includes long stretches of sandy beach.
About the Position
Norfolk General Hospital is seeking an Infection Control Practitioner. The ideal candidate would be dedicated to patient
care and committed to championing the Hospital’s Mission to relieve illness and suffering, and help people live
healthier lives. Reporting to the Manager of Infection Control, the incumbent would provide leadership in the
prevention and reduction of the incidence and morbidity of healthcare acquired infections in patients and staff.
Through consultation, surveillance and education, the incumbent would contribute to ensuring a safe environment for
patients, staff and visitors while adhering to departmental policies and procedures and would be responsible for the
following;

Planning, implementation and evaluation of infection prevention and control measures

Development of surveillance activities and screening protocols for selected communicable diseases

Analysis and interpretation of collected infection control data

Participate in the management of infectious disease cluster control and outbreaks

Education of individuals regarding infection prevention and control principles

Provide consultation to various members of the hospital team, patients, families, external healthcare facilities, and
public health

Provide back-up for Manager of Infection Control in her absence

Attend when applicable IPAC–CSO and CSICN meetings

Attend education sessions and conferences as available

Function as an active member or resource person on the following committees:
o Infection Control Committee
o Joint Health and Safety Committee
o Patient Safety Committee
o Nursing Practice Committee
Education & Qualifications


















A medical professional in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario or the College
of Nurses of Ontario
Baccalaureate degree in health care profession required
Completion of a Community and Hospital Infection Control Association of Canada (CHICA-Canada) endorsed Infection
Prevention and Control Course
An intention to write the Certification in Infection Control and Epidemiology (CIC) within 2 years of start of
employment.
Member of the National Infection Control Association ( IPAC Canada )
Knowledge of relevant Health Canada, Provincial Infectious Disease Advisory Committee (PIDAC Best Practice
Guidelines, and CSA Standards
Two years of clinical experience in a hospital setting required: at least one year experience working in Infection control
is required.
Demonstrated skills and knowledge in understanding clinical microbiology required
Experience with epidemiological priniciples, data collection statistic, audits and continues quality improvement
Computer literacy with word, excel, outlook
Knowledge of applicable legislature, NGH and/or departmental policies
Excellent problem solving skills and decision making abilities
Comfort with health teaching and leadership
Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Compliance with confidentiality requirements
Adherence to all health and safety policies, procedures and provisions and the recognition and reporting of unsafe
hazards and work practices
Excellent attendance record
Hours of Work: Must work shifts, weekends and holidays as required.
