1. Using the “octet rule”, write the Lewis formula for (a) SCl2, (b) CCl4, and (c) NF3.
2. Answer the following question that relate to VSEPR theory:
a. How many σ bonds are in SiF4?
b. How many σ bonds are in PCl3?
c. How many hybrid orbitals are in BF3?
d. How many hybrid orbitals are nonbonding in SnCl2?
3. Answer the following question that relate to VSEPR theory:
a. How many nonbonding electron pairs are on N in NH3?
b. How many nonbonding electron pairs are on O in H2O?
4. Answer the following question that relate to polarity:
a. Are the Sn-Cl bonds polar or nonpolar in SnCl2?
b. Are the Sn-Cl bonds polar or nonpolar in SnCl4?
c. Is the SnCl2 molecule polar or nonpolar?
d. Is the SnCl4 molecule polar or nonpolar?
Procedure
Using an appropriate set of molecular models, construct the following molecules/polyatomic ions, and write
their Lewis formulas. Determine the number of bonding orbitals (or electron pairs involved in bonding), nonbonding
orbitals (or number of nonbonding electron pairs), and degree of hybridization of the valence shell orbitals on the
centra atom. Also determine the VSEPR formula, the geometry of the molecule/polyatomic ion, and its polarity. The
central atom of the ion is italicized.
On separate sheets of paper, construct the following table for the following molecules/polyatomic ions.
