Lesson Plan Format - Biology 4300 - The Cell Cycle (mitosis) BACKGROUND / PLANNING 1. Biology/10th grade 2. Students will use models to simulate the mitotic cell cycle.. i. HS-LS1 -4 - Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms. 3. Materials/technology/resources— Students will need their student learning maps, computer access with the internet and word processor. Students will need free educreations accounts. Teachers will need to set up a free zaption account and have a system in place for collecting student work on the computer. PART 2: IMPLEMENTATION 1. Launch - Students take a pretest on the cell cycle (mitosis) to set a baseline score of their background knowledge of the cell cycle (mitosis) 2. Explore - Students set up their student learning maps with the activities of the lesson. Students watch and complete a zaption video designed to introduce the cell cycle (mitosis): http://zapt.io/t3cksmgc Students create a diagram of the cell cycle (mitosis) using the cell cycle (mitosis) simulation found on the seapup website: http://sepuplhs.org/high/sgi/teachers/genetics_act3_sim.html In groups students create presentations using educreations. Links to their presentations are submitted through a schoology discussion board. Students watch and critique eachothers presentations using a rubric. 3. Students will take a post-test on the cell cycle (mitosis) designed to show their growth in knowledge of the content. PART 3: ASSESSMENT 1. Throughout the lesson students will be assessed both formatively and summatively. The zaption video & simulation diagrams will be scored as a formative assignment. The educreations presentations and post-test will be graded summatively.
