Chapter 6 Test Review
Assume that ABC is a right triangle with hypotenuse AB. Solve the right triangle completely,
leaving angles in degrees-minutes (to the nearest minute) or degree-decimal (to the nearest
tenth) as indicated in the problem. Round side lengths to three decimal places.
1. B  56 48', c  63.1
2. A  39.4 , b  21.2
3. a  2, b  7
Solve ABC completely. Round angle measures to the nearest minute and side lengths to the
nearest tenth. Assume side x is opposite angle X.
4. A  25 26', B  78 , a  13.7
5. B  51 51', b  795.1, c  775.6
6. a  15, b  18, c  20
7. A  17 08', b  120, c  38
Applications
14. An engineer erects a 75-foot cellular telephone tower. Find the angle of elevation to the top of
the tower at a point on level ground 50 feet from its base.
15. For years the Woolworth skyscraper in New York City held the record for the world’s tallest
office building. If the length of the shadow of the building increases by 17.4 m as the angle of
elevation of the sun changes from 44 to 42, then how tall is the building?
16. A forest ranger atop a 3248-ft mesa is watching the progress of a forest fire spreading in her
direction. In 5 minutes the angle of depression of the leading edge of the fire changed from
11.34 to 13.51. At what speed in miles per hour is the fire spreading in the direction of the
ranger?
17. The course for a boat race starts at point A and proceeds in the direction S 52 W to a point B,
then in the direction S 40 E to a point C, and finally back to A. Point C lies 8 km directly south
of point A. Approximate the total distance of the race course (to the nearest tenth of a
kilometer.)
18. A flagpole at a right angle to the horizontal is located on a slope that makes an angle of 12
with the horizontal. The flagpole’s shadow is 16 meters long and points directly up the slope.
The angle of elevation from the tip of the shadow to the sun is 20. Find the height of the
flagpole.
19. A 100-foot vertical tower is to be erected on the side of a hill that makes a 6 angle with the
horizontal. Find the length of each of the two guy wires.
20. A plane flies 810 miles from Franklin to Centerville with a bearing of N 75 E. Then if flies 648
miles from Centerville to Rosemount with a bearing of N 32 E. Find the straight line distance
and bearing from Franklin to Rosemount.
