Practice Math ACT® Test 2 Notes on the Practice Exam This practice exam has three major sections to it: test, answer key with hints, and scoring guide. You’ll get the most out of this practice if you make the experience as authentic as possible so carefully follow the directions below. Good luck. Directions Find a quiet place to spend the next hour or two. Clear away all distractions and set a timer for 60 minutes. Once you start the timer resist the urge to pause for any reason or to peek ahead at the answers and hints. Once the timer goes off stop all work on test. Use the answer key to correct your test and the scoring guide to estimate your score on this practice exam. Lastly, go back through the exam using the hints to brush up on the ones you missed. Try converting all of them to decimals. 2 B Start by moving all the variable terms to one side and all the constants to the other. 3 B Remember, a rational number is any number that can be written in the form a/b, where A and B are both integers. 4 D Be careful! There are SIX tests total. Make sure to take that into account when computing the average! 5 B Think about what percent of gas the car USED to go the first 76 miles. 6 D To find the probability that the candy is NOT blue, you need to find the © 2013 Sophia Learning, LLC. Hint Practice Math ACT® Test 2 probability that the candy is yellow or red. 7 D Find the price of the jacket after the discount FIRST, then determine the sales tax on the new price. 8 D Try setting up a proportion to find the number of female students. Then you’ll be able to find the total number of students in the senior class. 9 E Set up an equation to find z first using the information you know. Then use that value for z to determine 140% of z. 10 C Remember the Fundamental Counting Principle? See if you can apply that here. 11 B Start by factoring each number completely and seeing what factors they have in common. 12 C Start by figuring out how long it takes Ryan to travel the distance to his grandparents’ house. 13 D You can use the Associative Property of Multiplication and multiply the decimals and the powers of 10 separately. 14 B Remember, a prime number is a number whose only factors are 1 and itself. 15 E There is a formula to help you simplify the square of a difference quickly, but if you don’t remember it you can always just multiply it out using FOIL. If it helps you, write out the two binomials and set up the multiplication so you don’t miss any terms! 16 A Remember, the roots of a quadratic equation are just its solutions. Start by factoring the equation to find the roots. 17 B Remember, to simplify a negative exponent in the numerator of a fraction you can move it to the denominator and make it positive. 18 C A good way to start a word problem like this is to identify known and unknown information, and then define a variable to represent what’s unknown. 19 A Remember, squaring a number means taking it to the power of 2. 20 D If you want to skip some unnecessary fraction multiplication by applying the distributive property, a shortcut to get rid of the parentheses is to multiply both sides by the reciprocal of 5/9. © 2013 Sophia Learning, LLC. Practice Math ACT® Test 2 21 E Remember, absolute value will always give you a POSITIVE number. 22 C Don’t get overwhelmed by all the words! Break up the problem into smaller chunks and find expressions for each number first. 23 C If you get stuck, try picking some numbers for a and b and seeing what you get for each answer choice. 24 D Apply the distributive property first to get rid of the parentheses. 25 B Remember, to simplify a negative exponent in the numerator of a fraction, you can move it to the denominator and make it positive. 26 D Look closely! You can subtract these two equations to quickly find the value of y. 27 B 28 D You can plug expressions into functions just like you can plug in numbers. So wherever you see an x in the function, replace it with x-1. 29 A Be careful here! Remember, when you divide both sides of an inequality by a negative number, the inequality sign flips! 30 C Remember, if the denominator of a fraction is equal to 0, the expression will be undefined. 31 B When you’re multiplying radicals that have the same index, you can just multiply everything under the radical together and put that product underneath one big radical. 32 E Remember, in a geometric sequence the next terms are found by multiplying by the same factor each time (the common ratio). 33 E Before you jump right into solving, take a close look at this equation. Thinking about what you know about square roots, do you see anything here that might cause an issue? 34 D Try putting the equation into slope-intercept form first by solving for y. 35 C Remember, perpendicular lines have slopes that are opposite reciprocals. © 2013 Sophia Learning, LLC. Remember that i = −1 . What happens when you square i? Practice Math ACT® Test 2 36 B Start by finding the distance between the two points on the coordinate plane using the distance formula. 37 B You can find the length of the diameter using the distance formula. Then you’re just a step away from finding the radius. 38 A You can determine the slope of the line by taking the change in y over the change in x, or the rise over the run. 39 A Start by solving the inequality for x. Be careful with the order of operations when simplifying! 40 E You can find the midpoint between two (x,y) coordinates by just averaging the x coordinates and the y coordinates. 41 C You can identify the radius of this circle from its equation: the standard 2 2 2 equation for a circle is (x-h) + (y-k) = r , where r is the radius. 42 E Remember, you can find the slope of a line from two points by taking the difference in the y coordinate over the difference in the x coordinates. 43 C Similar figures have side lengths that are proportional, but their perimeters are proportional as well. 44 E You can break this irregular figure into two smaller rectangles. Then just find the area of each rectangle and add to get the total area. 45 D Remember, a tangent line to a circle is perpendicular to its radius at the point of tangency. 46 C Remember, the formula for the area of a circle is πr , where r is the radius. 47 C In a circle, the measures of all the central angles will always add up to 360°. 48 B The faces of a cube are all congruent squares, so you can use the given area to figure out the length of one edge, which will be the same as the diameter of the sphere. 49 D In an isosceles trapezoid, remember that the opposite angles are supplementary. 50 C The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular at their point of intersection. 51 C Start by finding the volume of the cylinder to figure out how much total concrete is needed to fill the well. Be careful with units! 52 A Be careful here! There needs to be one yard of space on EACH SIDE of © 2013 Sophia Learning, LLC. 2 Practice Math ACT® Test 2 the circular pool. 53 D An angle that intercepts the diameter of a circle must be a right angle. So ∆JLM is a right triangle. 54 C You can find the width of the rectangle from the radius of the circle – since the circle is tangent to both sides of the rectangle, the width is twice the radius of the circle. 55 B When a transversal intersects two parallel lines, consecutive interior angles are supplementary. 56 D When a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, opposite angles are supplementary. 57 A Try drawing a right triangle on the coordinate plane. 58 E Start by rearranging the equation so you have sinθ by itself on one side. 59 B Try rewriting each trig function in terms of sin(θ) and cos(θ). Then see if you can cancel anything. 60 B Try drawing a picture and seeing if you can find any right triangles that can help you. © 2013 Sophia Learning, LLC.
