Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols Trinity College Chapel Sunday, December 8, 2013 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was held in Truro, England, in 1880. In 1918, just two months after the end of World War I, the Dean of King’s College, Cambridge, brought the service to the college chapel to offer comfort and hope to an England devastated by war. In 1958, Lessons and Carols was introduced at Trinity College, Hartford, and has been offered annually ever since. Readers are chosen from various groups within the College community, and the musical portions of the service are led by The Chapel Singers and The Trinity College Choir. Carillonneurs play before and after the service. For over fifty years the Festival of Lessons and Carols has been an annual invitation to the Trinity College community to discover afresh the birth and saving power of Emmanuel, God-with-us. Please stand, if able, for prayers and the singing of hymns and be seated for the readings and carols. The 4:00 p.m. service is being webcast on the Trinity College website. Kindly silence all personal electronic devices. Thank you. cover image: The Rose Window, Earl Sanborn, 1931-32. Between the fifth and sixth verses, a Collect for Christmas will be sung by a chorister: O God, you make us glad by the yearly festival of the birth of your only Son Jesus Christ: Grant that we, who joyfully receive him as our Redeemer, may with sure confidence behold Him when He comes to be our judge; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. 2 IRBY, Henry John Gauntlett Harmonized, Arthur Henry Mann Words, Cecil Frances Alexander and James Waring McCrady Descants, R.E. Smith and Paul Halley Please remain standing. BIDDING PRAYER Beloved in Christ, in this Christmastide, let it be our care and delight to hear again the message of the Angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger. Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by this holy Child; and let us make this chapel glad with our carols of praise. But first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for the mission and unity of the Church which he came to build, and especially in this country and within this city. And because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time remember in his name the poor and the helpless; the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all those who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. 3 Lastly, let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Chaplain continues: The Almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life; and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of Angels bring us all. Amen. THE FIRST LESSON GENESIS 3 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the LORD God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ The LORD God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.’ 4 HYMN COME, THOU LONG EXPECTED JESUS STUTTGART, William Henry Havergal Words, Charles Wesley Arrangement, Richard Webster THE SECOND LESSON GENESIS 22 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, ‘By myself I have sworn, says the LORD: Because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies, and by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for themselves, because you have obeyed my voice.’ CAROL DROP DOWN, YE HEAVENS Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open and let them bring forth salvation and let righteousness spring up together. Mercy and truth are met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Righteousness shall go before him and shall set us in the way of his steps. THE CHAPEL SINGERS Georgia McAdams, soprano Destin Dopwell, flute Music, Robert Edward Smith (b. 1946) Words, Isaiah 45:8; Psalm 85: 10, 11, 13 5 THE THIRD LESSON ISAIAH 9 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onwards and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. CAROL HARK THE GLAD SOUND! Hark the glad sound! The Savior comes, the Savior promised long; Let ev’ry heart prepare a throne, and every voice a song. He comes, the pris’ners to release, in Satan’s bondage held. The gates of brass before him burst, the iron fetters yield. He comes, the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure, And with the treasures of his grace to enrich the humble poor. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, your welcome shall proclaim, And heaven’s eternal arches ring with your beloved name. Amen. THE CHOIRS Music, Paul Lindsley Thomas '50 (b. 1929) Words, Philip Doddridge THE FOURTH LESSON ISAIAH 11 A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. 6 HYMN HARK! A THRILLING VOICE IS SOUNDING MERTON, William Henry Monk Words, Latin, ca. 6th cent. arranged, R. Webster descant, R.E. Smith THE FIFTH LESSON ISAIAH 60 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses' arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. The sun shall no longer be your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you by night; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. 7 CAROL TORCHES Torches, torches, run with torches, all the way to Bethlehem! Christ is born and now lies sleeping; come and sing your song to Him! Ah, Roro, Roro, my baby, ah, Roro, my love, Roro; Sleep you well, my heart’s own darling, while we sing you our Roro. Sing, my friends, and make you merry, joy and mirth and joy again; Lo, he lives, the King of heaven, now and evermore, Amen. THE TRINITY COLLEGE CHOIR Music, John Joubert (b. 1927) Words, translated from the Galician by J. B. Trend THE SIXTH LESSON LUKE 2 In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. CAROL AVE MARIA Angelus Domini nontiavit Mariae, Et concepit de Spiritu sancto. The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary, And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Maria dixit: Ecce ancilla Domini, Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord, Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Et verbum caro factum est et habitavit in nobis. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen. THE CHOIRS Music, Franz Biebl (1906-2001) Words, Ave Maria and Angelus, traditional Latin 8 THE SEVENTH LESSON LUKE 2 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. CAROL LUX ARUMQUE Lux, calida gravisque pura velut aurum et canunt angeli molliter modo natum. Light, warm and heavy as pure gold and the angels sing softly to the new-born baby. THE CHAPEL SINGERS Music, Eric Whitacre (b. 1970) Words, Edward Esch and Charles Anthony Silvestri CAROL IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long, long ago. Our God, Heav’n cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Heav’n and earth shall welcome Him when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed The Lord God Incarnate, Jesus Christ. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; But His mother only, in her maiden bliss, Worshipped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart. CHRISTINE BREWER, SOPRANO Music, Carolee Coombs-Stacy (b. 1942) Words, Christina Rossetti 9 THE EIGHTH LESSON MATTHEW 2 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. CAROL I SAW THREE SHIPS On Christmas day, Rejoice! I saw three ships come sailing in, on Christmas day in the morning. Pray, whither sailed those ships all three, on Christmas day in the morning? O, they sailed into Bethlehem on Christmas day. And what was in those ships all three, on Christmas day in the morning? Our Savior Christ and His Lady, on Christmas day in the morning. And all the bells on earth shall ring, on Christmas day in the morning. And all the angels in heav’n shall sing, on Christmas day. THE CHOIRS Music, Geoffrey Bush (1920-1998) from A Christmas Cantata Words, English traditional THE NINTH LESSON The congregation stands. JOHN 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. 10 HYMN JOY TO THE WORLD ANTIOCH, George Friderich Handel, adapt. and arr. Lowell Mason Words, Isaac Watts Arrangement, R. Webster 11 COLLECT O God, who hast caused this holy night to shine with the illumination of the true Light: Grant us, we beseech thee, that as we have known the mystery of that Light upon earth, so may we also perfectly enjoy him in heaven; where with thee and the Holy Spirit he liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. OFFERTORY Let us with gladness present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. Thank you for making a generous contribution to the Trinity College Chapel to support student leadership and initiatives in religious life. CAROL PRELUDES ON WHAT CHILD IS THIS? ORGAN VOLUNTARY Robert Edward Smith and Searle Wright (1918-2004) CAROL NOEL Noel! O sing Noel! Jesus Christ is born today. Dark December turns to May. Lift we all our hearts and sing To the Child, our newborn King: Joy and hope do now take wing. O Little Babe, so meek and mild, Turn thou the hearts of those defiled To thoughts of love and gentleness. O save us by thy holiness. Help us to deeds both kind and good, Bring in the day of brotherhood, When truth and love shall conquer sin. Now let that blessed day begin. Sing we to God’s only Son. God and man are now made one. Let our mirth and praises ring, Angel voices echoing To the everlasting King. THE CHAPEL SINGERS Words and music, Searle Wright 12 HYMN HARK!
