Daniell Middle School Band 2900 Scott Rd, Marietta, GA 30066 • 678.594.8048 • Fax 678.594.8050 [email protected] • [email protected] th February 2, 2017 th Dear 7 and 8 Grade Concert Band Parents and Students, Our next big event that we are preparing for in band is Large Group Performance Evaluation or LGPE. The students are very aware of this as we have been working hard on the selections. In many ways, LGPE can be compared to the Georgia Milestones. However, the main difference is that in band, we perform as a group instead of taking the test individually. At LGPE, which takes place in March, each band will perform for a panel of judges and will be evaluated based on our curriculum standards. Each band will receive feedback and ratings from a panel of judges based on how well they perform their musical selections. There will also be ‘specialists’ who will be judging very specific areas: Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, and Conductor. After the band’s performance on stage, the band will enter the clinic and sight-reading portions of LGPE. During the clinic portion, a judge will give the band immediate feedback regarding their performance on stage. Then, during the sight-reading portion, the band is given a piece of music that they’ve never seen before. After studying and working through the piece without actually playing it, the band then performs the piece for the sight-reading judge. This judge will rate the band’s sight-reading skill and ability. We recently received our performance times and dates. Our schedule for LGPE is outlined below. Please enter these dates and times into your family’s calendars so that you can plan on attending your student’s performance! Also, please note that we conduct a “practice LGPE” called the LGPE Preview Concert. This event is prior to the actual LGPE at Daniell Middle School and takes place on Tuesday, February 28 (more details will be sent home about this performance at a later date). Parents are invited and highly encouraged to attend both the Preview Concert and the LGPE. The students LOVE to have the support of their friends and family! Plus, when we perform at LGPE, this will take place in the nicest concert hall our students have performed in to date. Additionally, please complete the attached field trip form in order for your student to attend LGPE. Students must also turn in a medical form that must be notarized. Many of our students have already completed the medical form. Your student will receive another medical form if we do not have record of him/her turning one in yet. When completing the medical form, the parent must take the form to a notary and sign the form in the notary’s presence. Then, the notary will complete their portion of the form. Notaries can be found at a variety of locations such as banks, some FedEx/Kinko’s locations, and in our school’s front office. This form is required by Cobb County in order for students to travel to LGPE. Only one medical form needs to be completed each year for band. This one form covers all band field trips that take place during the school year. th th 7 and 8 Grade Concert Band Schedule: Please make sure your student wears their concert attire to school on their LGPE performance day. Concert attire for LGPE is as follows: the “band” polo shirt, black dress pants, solid black belt, black socks/hose (that extend at least to the middle of the calf,) and solid black shoes. Shirts will be worn tucked into the pants. Please note that denim, capris pants, shorts, skirts, tennis shoes or sneakers are NOT acceptable. If a student does not own a “band” polo shirt, a solid black shirt free of any writing or designs may be substituted. It is of the utmost importance for students to wear the uniform mentioned above so that we can look our best as an ensemble and make a positive impression on the judges. (band shirts can be purchased from our school bookkeeper in the front office) Monday, March 20 - McEachern High School, 2400 New Macland Rd, Powder Springs, GA 30127 *please note that these times are rough estimates, sometimes LGPE runs behind schedule which would impact our timeline* 9:40 am 10:00 am 10:25 am 10:50 am 12:15 pm 1:00 pm 1:20 pm 1:45 pm 3:15 pm Report to the Band Room for attendance Eat lunch in the cafeteria Final Preparations in the Band Room Depart Daniell Middle School Warm up PERFORMANCE Clinic session (held with one of our judges) Sight-reading Estimated arrival back at Daniell Middle School We would like to invite everyone to come to our evaluation performances. You may stay with us throughout the entire process, including the sight-reading part of the event. It is very impressive to our judges to see such strong support from our parents, so if you can make it to McEachern, we would love to have you supporting us in the audience. Additionally, please avoid scheduling any orthodontic appointments where students will be getting braces between March 6-20. Also, please avoid scheduling routine orthodontic appointments between March 17-20. Believe us, your student will thank you! We will also need chaperones for each event. We will be coordinating our chaperone needs through Charms, and that email will be sent out soon. Please sign up to chaperone if you’re available. It’s a very easy field trip of accompanying the kids through the LGPE process. We would greatly appreciate your help! Sincerely, Chrissy Holbrook and Jared Kaufman
