You must answer THREE questions, ONE question from each section. It is suggested that you spend no more than ONE hour on each section. Remember, read the criteria being assessed before you write your answer. All written responses must be in English. Question 1 What major issues have been raised by historians in the debate about the causes of World War I? Question 2 ‘It was a peace of vengeance. It reeked with injustice!’ With reference to the aims of the signatories and the treaties concluded, discuss how historians and other commentators have viewed the various treaties signed at Paris in 1919-1920. Question 3 ‘The failure of international diplomacy to prevent the rise of aggression by the Axis powers has been seen as a critical factor in the outbreak of World War II.’ In the light of this statement, examine the ways historians have seen the causes of the war. (You must refer to both the European and Asian theatres in your response.) Question 4 What reasons have been offered by historians to explain the victory of the Allied powers in World War II? Question 5 How have historians attempted to explain the origins and scope of the Cold War in the half century after 1941? What factors have prompted a re-evaluation of these opinions? Question 6 What have been the explanations offered by historians and other commentators for the outbreak of the Gulf War in 1990 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003?
