Free Tickets available beginning Thursday, December 15
MIAMI – As part of its 2016-17 season, Cleveland Orchestra Miami is offering a free Cleveland Orchestra
community concert at Miami-Dade County Auditorium on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. as part
of its commitment to sharing extraordinary musical experiences in Miami-Dade County. The program, led
by conductor Roderick Cox, features The Cleveland Orchestra performing works by Dvořák,
Mendelssohn, and Sibelius, plus Saint-Saëns’s Havanaise for Violin and Orchestra with violinist Elena
Urioste as soloist. The complete program is listed below. This year’s free community concert is copresented by The Cleveland Orchestra and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of MiamiDade County.
Tickets are available to the public beginning Thursday, December 15 and can be obtained in person at
the Miami-Dade County Auditorium box office at 2901 West Flagler St., Miami, FL 33135 or online at
MiamiDadeCountyAuditorium.org. While admission to the concert is free, tickets are required. There is a
limit of six tickets per person.
This free community concert is a part of Cleveland Orchestra Miami’s ongoing partnership with the MiamiDade County Department of Cultural Affairs to deliver world-class music to Miami’s diverse communities
at the County’s various venues. The first free Cleveland Orchestra Miami community concert was held in
2015 at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. In March 2016, a day of free chamber music
performances by Cleveland Orchestra musicians took place at branches of the Miami-Dade Public Library
System.
“A cornerstone of Cleveland Orchestra Miami’s activities is our commitment to present engaging
community programs for diverse populations throughout the Miami-Dade region,” said Montserrat
Balseiro, Managing Director of Cleveland Orchestra Miami. “This year’s free community concert is one of
multiple programs, including education activities and concerts in partnership with the Adrienne Arsht
Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County that connect with over 20,000 children, students,
and adults each year. With this community concert on January 29, we are thrilled to provide access to the
world-class Cleveland Orchestra for free as we work to reach as many music lovers as possible.”
“We are excited to partner with Cleveland Orchestra Miami for this exclusive, one-day community
performance for the very first time by The Cleveland Orchestra at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium,”
said Patricia Arbealez, Theater Director, and Javier Siut, Assistant Theater Director.
Cleveland Orchestra Miami
Celebrating its eleventh season in 2016-17, Cleveland Orchestra Miami was launched in January 2007
during the inaugural 2006-07 season of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade
County. Cleveland Orchestra Miami serves Miami-Dade with an array of musical presentations by The
Cleveland Orchestra, including a series of subscription concerts, education programs, and community
engagement activities – touching the lives of more than 20,000 children, students, and adults each year.
Under the leadership of the not-for-profit Miami Music Association, Cleveland Orchestra Miami is
supported through the generosity of music-lovers from across South Florida who believe in the power of
great orchestral music for adults and young people alike. Each season of Cleveland Orchestra Miami
concerts is presented in partnership with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. For more
information, visit www.clevelandorchestramiami.com.
The Cleveland Orchestra
Under the leadership of Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, The Cleveland Orchestra has become one of
the most sought-after performing ensembles in the world. Acclaimed internationally as one of the most
dynamic orchestral collaborations today, the partnership between The Cleveland Orchestra and Franz
Welser-Möst has resulted in an unprecedented series of residencies in the United States and Europe,
including ongoing residencies in Miami and at the Musikverein concert hall in Vienna as well as regular
appearances in New York City and at music festivals across Europe. Founded in 1918, the Orchestra
performs at home in Ohio in two of the world’s finest concert venues: Severance Hall and Blossom Music
Center. For more information, visit www.clevelandorchestra.com.
Roderick Cox
This concert marks Roderick Cox’s Cleveland Orchestra debut. Cox was named the Minnesota
Orchestra’s Associate Conductor in September 2016, following a year in which he served as the
ensemble’s Assistant Conductor. Before arriving in Minnesota, Cox served for two years as Assistant
Conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Alabama Symphony Youth
Orchestra. He was awarded the Robert J. Harth Conducting Prize from the Aspen Music Festival in 2013,
which led to national recognition and a return to the festival as a fellow. He has also held fellowships with
the Chicago Sinfonietta as part of the Project Inclusion program and the Chautauqua Music Festival,
where he was a David Effron Conducting Fellow.
During the 2015-16 season, Cox was selected by the League of American Orchestras as one of five
conductors presented at the 2016 Bruno Walter National Conducting Preview, a prestigious showcase for
young conductors from around the country. In 2013, Cox was one of four conductors selected by the
League to conduct the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of its Music Director, David
Robertson. For two consecutive summers he was named by Marin Alsop to attend the Conductors Guild
Conductor/Composer Training Workshop at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.
Elena Urioste
Elena Urioste, amusingly hailed by The Washington Post as “a drop-dead beauty who plays with equal
parts passion, sensuality, brains and humor,” was recently selected as a BBC New Generation Artist and
has been featured on the cover of Symphony magazine. She has given acclaimed performances with
major orchestras throughout the United States, including the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras; New
York and Buffalo Philharmonics; Boston Pops; and the Chicago, National, Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit,
Pittsburgh, Richmond, and San Antonio Symphony Orchestras. Abroad, Ms. Urioste has appeared with
the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National
Orchestra of Wales, Edmonton Symphony, Würzburg Philharmonic, and Hungary’s Dohnányi Orchestra
Budafok and MAV Orchestra.
Urioste is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Joseph Silverstein, Pamela
Frank, and Ida Kavafian. She completed graduate studies with Joel Smirnoff at The Julliard School. As
first-place laureate in both the Junior and Senior divisions of the Sphinx Competition for Black and Latino
string players, Elena debuted at Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium in 2004 and has returned
frequently as a soloist. An avid chamber musician as well as soloist, Elena has been featured artist at the
Marlboro, Ravinia, La Jolla, Bridgehampton, Moab, and Sarasota Music Festivals as well as Switzerland’s
Sion-Valais International Music Festival and the Verbier Festival’s winter residency at Schloss Elmau. Ms.
Urioste’s first CD was released on the White Pine label, and her second recording – with pianist Michael
Brown – was released on BIS Records in 2016.
Miami-Dade County Auditorium
Miami-Dade County Auditorium opened its doors in 1951 and has achieved a splendid history as one of
South Florida’s premier performing arts centers. This popular multipurpose theater features Art Deco
Revival décor. It offers three dynamic presentation styles: a 2,372-seat theatre that can host major dance,
theatre and music performances; a “mid-stage” theatre that can accommodate up to 450 patrons and is
well-suited for small concerts, dance and theatre presentations, giving mid-sized organizations an ideal
setting to showcase their work; and a 250-seat black box theatre in which both audience and performers
share the stage of the auditorium, adapted into an innovative studio theatre for more intimate – and often
cutting-edge – shows. In January 2012, the operation of Miami-Dade County Auditorium was transferred
to the Department of Cultural Affairs, which has a track record of innovation and artistic excellence. For

Affairs, visit http://www.miamidadearts.org/facilities/miami-dade-county-auditorium and

nearly 500 events each year across its eight flexible, state-of-the-art performance spaces. The Center

the community and an arts education program that serves nearly 30,000 children each year. As Miami’s
new Town Square, the Arsht Center also houses Brava! a fine dining restaurant; the Café at Books &
Books in the historic Carnival Tower; and a weekly Farmers Market. Visit www.arshtcenter.org for more
