Thursday, April 23rd Warmup: Write your 3rd Body Paragraph (Counter-‐Claim and Rebu\al) –  Example: Claim Statement: Adver6sing to youth is bad because it causes peer pressure, encourages bad habits, and wastes money. •  Take the third reason in the claim statement. •  Re-‐word the third reason in your Counter-‐Claim. –  Example: Some people may argue that adver6sing to youth is good because youth spend money on things they need, rather than want. For example, in a 2014 annual report on spending, youth es6mated to spend most of their money (51%) on clothing, food, and personal care (Here’s How Teens Really Spend). This shows that youth may spend a lot of money, however the money they spend is going towards items that they need. However, this is not true because the amount of money that youth spend per year does not imply that the money was spent on “needs” that the child has, rather than on something the child “wants.” For example, “Teens in the US spend around $160 billion a year and children (up to 11) spend around $18 billion a year” (Children as Consumers). This proves that youth spend a lot of money every year, which is a waste. Thus, adver6sing to youth does cause them to waste money. Friday, April 24th •  Which of the following is the correct cita6on format? –  For instance, kids influenced $1.12 trillion in family spending last year (Savvy Marke6ng). –  “At stake 1.12 trillion. That’s the amount that kids influenced last year.” (Savvy Marke6ng pg. 117) –  In the ar6cle, Savvy Marke6ng, it says “at stake 1.12$ trillion. That’s the amount.” *Fix the two INCORRECT cita6ons so that they work. How do you embed a quote? •  Look at your first body paragraph in the packet. •  Look at the topic sentence. •  Look at your first piece of evidence. •  How does the evidence prove your topic sentence? •  Write out your evidence as an embedded quote with analysis. (Follow example on the next slide.) •
Embedding Quotes Cont… Example: Claim Statement: A dver6sing to youth is bad because it causes peer pressure, encourages bad habits, and wastes money. •  First Body Paragraph talks about how adver6sing causes peer pressure. •  Example: Topic Sentence: Adver6sing to youth is bad because it causes peer pressure. •  Example: Embedded Quote: For instance, according to the film, “Consuming Kids,” when youth see others wearing something that is considered popular, and he/
she cannot buy that par6cular ouxit, the young person feels leZ out. This causes peer pressure because young people want to fit in, and they are pressured by popular youth to look a certain way.
