Getting Started
See the tips below for introducing the lesson. Make copies of the student data sheet (page 59) and the
appropriate leveled activity sheet for each group of learners (pages 60–62).
Access prior knowledge by using coordinate grids and ordered pairs, talking about secret codes, and
recalling terms for spatial and positional reasoning (such as inside, outside, on).
Tier 1
• Use the Grid: Identify (0, 0) on a
coordinate grid as the point from which
all other points are named (origin).
Model “Over, then up!” to reinforce
sequence in ordered pairs. Explain
using parentheses and a comma to
write ordered pairs. Complete the
hidden word together and discuss the
illustration. Then assign items 1–4. For
items 5–7, have students list the letters
in the same order as the ordered pairs
that name them.
• Points, Shapes, and Words: Provide
rulers children can use to connect
points. For items 8–10, some students
might need to write letters on paper
squares they can manipulate until
they make words they know. Remind
children to put coded letters in the
same sequence as the ordered pairs
that identify them.
• Name Codes: Provide index cards or
sentence strips children can use to list
ordered pairs in sequence. You may
want to have students trade cards to
solve one another’s name codes.

Tier 2
Tier 3
• Use the Grid: Chant “Over,
then up!” to locate points with
ordered pairs. Review using
parentheses and a comma to
write ordered pairs. Stress that
letters must be linked in the
same order as the ordered pairs
that identify them.
• Use the Grid: Use
“Over, then up!” for
plotting points with
ordered pairs. Stress
that letters must be
linked in the same order
as the ordered pairs that
identify them.
• Points, Shapes, and Words:
Have children use rulers to
connect points and consult a
math book or dictionary to spell
shape names. For item 7, have
students write each letter on a
separate paper to manipulate
until they identify the four words.
• Points, Shapes, and
Words: Challenge
children to create other
inside/outside questions
to pose to classmates.
• Code Riddles: After children
decode the answer to the riddle,
be sure they understand it.
Provide riddle books, as well as
index cards or sentence strips
on which to write encoded
riddles. You may want to have
students trade cards to solve
one another’s riddles.
• Ask and Answer:
Collect the question
cards for an interactive
bulletin board or a math
center, or post them on a
class website for others
to solve and answer.

Identifying and analyzing
plane figures
All 26 letters of the alphabet are on the grid below. Each letter
is on a point. You can name each point with an ordered pair.

For example, find the letter A. It is on point (1, 5). A is 1 space
to the right of 0 and 5 spaces up from 0. Which ordered pair
Order matters
in ordered pairs.
Think: Over, then up.

You can use ordered pairs as a code. When you link ordered pairs together, you can spell
words! Find the letter at each ordered pair shown below. What is the hidden greeting?

2. What letter is at (6, 2)?
3. What is the ordered pair for U?
4. What is the ordered pair for P?
5. Which ordered pairs spell cat?
6. Which ordered pairs spell the word for a baby cat?
7. What do the letters at (4, 4) (5, 1) (1, 1) and (7, 5) spell?
Points, Shapes, and Words
Connect the points to answer the questions.
8. Draw a straight line to connect points (1, 5) and (7, 5).
What other point is on that line?
What word can you make with these three letters?
9. What shape do you make if you connect points (3, 7) (5, 3) and (7, 5)?
What word do the points of this shape spell?
Name Codes You need a blank card.
44 Figure out if you can use ordered pairs to spell your name.
Write them on one side of the card.
Front

44 Figure out the ordered pairs that spell a classmate’s name.
Write them on the other side of the card.

2. Which ordered pairs spell frog?
3. What animal’s name is spelled with (1, 3) (3, 7) (1, 5) (5, 1) (2, 0)?
4. Can you use ordered pairs to spell your first name? Which ones?
Which ordered pairs spell your last name?
Points, Shapes, and Words
Connect the points to answer the questions.
5. What shape do you make by connecting (3, 7) (5, 3) and (7, 5)?
What word do the points of this shape spell?
6. Connect points (1, 3) (3, 3) (3, 1) and (1, 1). What figure do you make?
What words can you spell with the letters at those points?
7. Connect points (6, 2) (1, 1) (2, 4) and (7, 4). What figure do you make?
What animal name can you spell with these four points?
What words can you spell with the letters inside this figure?
Code Riddles Use ordered pairs to solve the riddle. Then try your own!
What kind of house doesn’t weigh very much? Use these points to find the answer:
(2, 4) (5, 0) (7, 5) (3, 7) (3, 3) (3, 7) (1, 1) (5, 3) (1, 3) (3, 5)
Now make your own riddle on a blank card.
