Students should know distinguishing facts between the social groups of China.
Aristocrats
Owned large estates
Large houses with tile roofs, courtyards and gardens.

Sons and grandsons owned less property over time
Relied on farmers to grow crops to make them rich.
Peasants Farmers
Nine out of ten were farmers
Ranked higher than a merchant
Lived in simple houses inside village walls
North- grew wheat and millet
South- grew rice

Review the handout and other notes on the Ancient Silk Road. Pages 247-248
 Essay Two
List at least six Chinese inventions. Which invention was the most important? Why do you
think so? Justify your answer.
