Community Eyecare Scheme (MECS)
Formulary
This policy assumes that the practitioner is a community Optometrist without additional
prescribing or therapeutic supply qualifications. Consequently the MECS formulary is
confined to the therapeutic agents that such a practitioner can either supply, for which
they can write a Signed Order, or which the patient can purchase Over The Counter from
their Pharmacist.
The Optometrist may also request these products on prescription for eligible patients by
producing a prescription request using Optomanager and sending this to the patient’s
GP. However you should also consider that this process is likely to take longer,
especially at weekends or bank holidays, and so may result in an inappropriate delay in
the patient starting treatment (e.g. where infection is present).
