Association of American Medical Colleges
Recommendation
Pharmaceutical representatives should be
restricted to non-patient care areas and
nonpublic areas and should take place only
by appointment or invitation of the
physician.
Pharmaceutical
Samples
Distribution of medications in academic
medical centers, including samples (if
permitted), should be centrally managed.
On-site and
continuing
medical
education (CME)
Academic medical centers offering CME
programs should develop audit mechanisms
to assure compliance with ACCME
standards,
Consulting
Appropriate interaction include...services
provided through professional services
agreements and consulting contracts,
provided such activities are conducted in full
compliance with the policies of the medical
center and applicable law, and that
compensation reflects the fair market value
of the services provided.
Academic medical centers should prohibit
their psychiatrists, trainees, and students
from directly accepting travel funds from
industry.
The task force recommends that all academic
medical centers make available to their
patient communities and the public
information regarding (i) the industry
relationships of their individual psychiatrists
by whatever means each institution deems
appropriate to articulate clearly the existence
of these relationships; (ii) the value to
society of such relationships; and (iii) a
description of the institution’s efforts to
mitigate bias resulting from such
relationships.

Recommendation
Pharmaceutical and device representatives
are not allowed to meet with faculty
regardless of location, or are not permitted to
market their products anywhere inside the
medical center and associated clinics and
offices. (Exceptions may be made for nonmarketing purposes, such as training on
devices or equipment.)
Industry samples are prohibited, except
under certain narrow circumstances
approved by the institution that protect the
interests of patients and prevent the use of
samples as a marketing tool
Industry is not permitted to provide direct
financial support for educational activities,
including Continuing Medical Education
(CME), directly or through a subsidiary
agency. (However, companies may
contribute unrestricted funds to a central
fund or oversight body at the academic
medical center, which, in turn, would pool
and disburse funds for programs that are
independent of any industry input or
control.)
Consulting relationships with industry must
be subjected to institutional review or
approval. Additionally, they must either be
described in a formal contract, or payment
for services must be commensurate to the
task.

Purchasing and
Formulary
Committees
Academic medical centers should establish
and implement policies that require any
personnel who has a financial interest in any
particular manufacturer of pharmaceuticals,
devices, or equipment, or any provider of
services, to disclose such interests according
to institutional policies and to recuse
themselves from involvement in purchasing
decisions relevant to the conflicting interests.

Speaking
Relationships
Academic medical centers should strongly
discourage participation by their faculty in
industry-sponsored speakers bureaus. To the
extent that academic medical centers choose
to allow participation...they should develop
standards that define appropriate and
acceptable involvement including ”full
transparency and disclosure by their
personnel to the centers” and “payments to
academic personnel be only at fair market
value.”
Prohibit the acceptance of any gifts from
industry.
