7th Grade Logic
Course materials will be provided in class. During the course, students will be reading and
analyzing a variety of texts, most of them related to the theme of civil liberties and to “hotbutton” societal issues. The readings will include: the Declaration of Independence; Abraham
Lincoln’s Gettysburg address; Susan B. Anthony’s “Women’s Right to Vote” speech; Martin Luther
King’s “I Have a Dream” speech; George Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant,” “Such, Such Were the
Joys …” (parts 1 - 3), and “A Hanging”; Langston Hughes’ poem “Harlem”; Walt Whitman’s
poem “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer”; and Lewis Carroll riddles. At various times
throughout the school year students will also view in class advertisements and other media
related to the subject of logic and rhetoric.

"Life is Beautiful" during our “literature as a response to society” unit.
We will read several nonfiction texts that demonstrate real world circumstances that surround several of
the topics we will discuss, such as: technology in society, holocaust survivors, and solider perspectives.
