Biodiversity
The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat
or ecosystem.
Guiding Question:
How do we make sense of the living world
through scientific processes?
Living things have four things
they all share in common
Living things
•
Are made of one or more cells
•
Grow and develop
•
Reproduce
•
Respond
1) Living things are made of
one or more cells
•
A cell is a microscopic (can’t be seen by the
naked eye) structure which is the basic unit of all
living things.
Some organisms like
this bacteria are made
up of only one cell.
•
Some living things are made up of many cells
(multicellular). We are made up of trillions of cells.
2) Living things grow and
develop
•
Most organisms have a life span.
•
Some organisms like a mayfly may only live for
three days.
•
Other organisms like the Bowhead Whale can
live to be over 200 years old.
3) Living things reproduce
•
There are many different types of reproduction.
•
Some organisms give birth to live young (like
humans)
•
Some organisms like birds and fish hatch from
eggs.
•
Plants develop from seeds and spores.
•
And some bacteria reproduce by splitting into two,
called Binary Fission.
4) Living things respond
•
Living things respond to stimuli (changes in the
environment).
•
Example: Quickly taking your hand away from
something hot.
Squinting when you look at bright light.
•
Some plants respond to light by turning
towards it.
The Needs of Living
Things

•
•
There are four basic
needs that all organisms
share.
They must find these
things within their
environment or they will
die.
1) Living things need
nutrients and energy.
•
•
•
Nutrients are things that
organisms need to be healthy
and grow.
Organisms need energy to
grow, develop and reproduce.

2) Living things need
water.
3) Living things need
air.
4) Living things need a
habitat, or a place to
live.
•
The physical space
where an organism
lives is called a habitat.
Think about how all the organisms
in this video get nutrients and
energy, water, air, and how their
habitat provides them with these
things.

1)
In your notebook on the right side,
complete the needs of organism
handout.
2) On the left side, pick any organism and
write about how it meets (being specific)
the four needs discussed today.
