DIRK HOULT
Throughout his time at VCA, Dirk has focused
his attenion on the dramaturgy, development,
and production of original cabaret and
music theatre, and plans to connect with a
mentor who specialises in the practice of
dramaturgy for music theatre. It is his ambition
to find employment as Resident Director
on a commercial musical, and to continue
connecting with makers of original cabaret,
theatre, and new music theatre. In March, Dirk
was invited by Neil Gooding and the team
at the Hayes Theatre to be present for the
development and rehearsals of The Detective’s
Handbook, under the direction of Jonathan
Biggins. Dirk is inspired by Australia’s untold
queer stories, which challenge the stigmas
of difference surrounding gender, sexual
preference, disability and disease, and is
committed to finding innovative ways to share
them with audiences.

Stephanie Ghajar is a Melbourne-based
theatre-maker, completing her Master of
Dramaturgy at the Victorian College of
the Arts, while working as a director and
dramaturg in collaboration with other
Melbourne-based artists. Her work explores
the individual in deeply personal situations
of disappointment, suffering, frustration,
and struggle, in moments where the familiar
motions of the everyday darken and veer
toward the tragic, whilst maintaining its
ritualistic performance. Ghajar seeks to delve
into the realms of who or what governs and
manipulates this ‘straying’, in an attempt to
open a space for discussion in the public
sphere. Her undergraduate studies in media
and communications have helped her to form
structure around her work, moving away from
rhetoric and looking into how experiences can
be created around/through an audience.

THANKS
A special thank you to all the performers shown in the images throughout this booklet, as well as the
companies and individuals who provided internship opportunities during 2016. We would also like to
thank the many guest speakers and tutors who provided students with invaluable advice and insight
into their respective professional practices.
