Lesscommonly,infectioncanoccurbyingestingfoodorwaterthathasbeencontaminatedwith animalwastesorinfectedcarcasses.Infectionmayoccurfrombreathingaerosolizedbacteria,as couldhappenwhenmowingoverdeadrabbitorrodentcarcasses. Public Health Considerations Tularemiacaninfecthumansanddomesticanimals,andinfectionscanbefatalifnotdetectedand treatedpromptly.Topreventinfection,avoidticks,fliesandfleasbywearinglongclothingandinsect repellents,andusingfleaandtickpreventativesforyourpets.Donotallowpetstoconsume carcasses.Donothandlesickorinjuredwildlife.Whenhunting,donotskinorconsumeanimalsthat youobservetobesickordead.Whenfielddressingcarcasses,protectyourselffromcontactwith tissues,fluids,andparasites(i.e.,ticks,fleas).Contactyourphysicianimmediatelyifyoufeelillor developskinlesionsfollowingcontactwithwildanimals,ticks,fleas,orotherbitinginsects.
