EGG-IN-A-BOTTLE
Laura Sessions, Period: 8| Mrs. McNees| Syracuse Junior High
Statement of the Problem
Can you get an egg in to a bottle
without physically pushing it?

It showed me how to get the egg out of the bottle.
It showed me safety procedures for the project.
It gave me tips for the project.
Specified materials not needed, but it made the project easier.
Gave me examples of how to do it.

Hypothesis
If the pressure in the bottle decreases, then the egg will
get sucked in because of the loss of oxygen.
Procedure: Materials
• Hard-boiled eggs
• Wide-mouth glass drink bottle
• Vegetable oil
• Matches
• Strips of paper
Procedure: Steps
• Boil and peel eggs
• Cover the mouth of the clean drink jar with
vegetable oil
• Light the strips of paper on fire and put it in the jar
• Quickly place the egg on top of the jar
• Observe
Variables
• Constants: The eggs
• Controlled variables: The egg over the mouth of the
bottle with no matches on the inside
• Independent (manipulated) variable: Level of
oxygen and carbon dioxide in the bottle.
• Dependent (measured) variable: Change of pressure,
amount of matches, size of egg, size of the mouth
of the bottle.
Data/Observations
The first time I tried the experiment, it didn’t work. I discovered it
was because I didn’t put the egg on top of the bottle fast enough. But, the
second time it worked for me. It took about five seconds before the egg started
wobbling.
Conclusion
H- The loss of oxygen in the bottle, due to the paper
burning, sucked the egg into the bottle without me
physically pushing, so my hypothesis was supported.
P- Because of the loss of oxygen, the egg was sucked
into the bottle.
