“In God We Trust” a United States of America motto • The phrase appears to have originated in "The Star-Spangled Banner", written during the War of 1812. The fourth stanza includes the phrase, "And this be our motto: 'In God is our Trust.'" This version of the motto made an early appearance on the twenty dollar interest bearing notes issued in 1864 along with the motto "God and our Right". O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war’s desolation! Blest with victory and peace may the heaven rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto – “In God is our trust,” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. 4th Stanza Star Spangled Banner 1814 by, Francis Scott Key • The Congress passed a Act of April 22, 1864. This legislation changed the composition of the one-cent coin and authorized the minting of the two-cent coin. The Mint Director was directed to develop the designs for these coins for final approval of the Secretary. IN GOD WE TRUST first appeared on the 1864 two-cent coin. • Another Act of Congress passed on March 3, 1865 allowed the Mint Director, with the Secretary's approval, to place the motto on all gold and silver coins that "shall admit the inscription thereon." Under the Act, the motto was placed on the gold double-eagle coin, the gold eagle coin, and the gold half-eagle coin. It was also placed on the silver dollar coin, the half-dollar coin and the quarterdollar coin, and on the nickel three-cent coin beginning in 1866. Later, Congress passed the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873. It also said that the Secretary "may cause the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to be inscribed on such coins as shall admit of such motto." • A law passed by the 84th Congress (P.L. 84-140) and approved by President Eisenhower on July 30, 1956, the President approved a Joint Resolution of the 84th Congress, declaring IN GOD WE TRUST the national motto of the United States. IN GOD WE TRUST was first used on paper money in 1957, when it appeared on the one-dollar silver certificate. The first paper currency bearing the motto entered circulation on October 1, 1957. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) was converting to the dry intaglio printing process. During this conversion, it gradually included IN GOD WE TRUST in the back design of all classes and denominations of currency. Starting in 1964, The Federal Reserve Notes in the Denominations of $1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 bills had the US Motto of “In God We Trust” engraved upon them. In 2002 and in 2011, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reaffirm the national motto. The resolution also encourages the public to display the motto on all public buildings, including schools and government institutions. • The federal lawsuit was filed in early 2003 and drug out in courts through December 2005. Davidson County won in federal District Court in Greensboro and also won in the Court of Appeals. The case was appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court but was referred back to the appellate court. • To provide the Motto in the Public meeting room, financing for the emblem would come from public fund-raising. Once the government body figures out what they want to approve, local committee members will work to raise the funds from local businesses, churches and individuals in the community. • A nonprofit organization, called In God We Trust – America, based out of Bakersfield, California recorded in the summer of 2015 that 531 cities and counties have approved the motto to be displayed in their public meeting rooms, two of the newest: the cities of Laguna Niguel and Orange. In 2016, 126 cities (City of Madera 8/9/16) and counties in California have adopted the resolution, in addition to 83 other legislative bodies in Arkansas, Colorado, Florida and Georgia. • Our currency also displays the Latin phrase “e pluribus unum”. This phrase is also on our nation’s seal. Some cities have chosen both, “In God We Trust” and “e pluribus unum” – “Out of Many, One”. • I would ask the Madera County Board of Supervisors to adopt a resolution declaring the Motto of “In God We Trust” to be displayed in this public meeting room. The size and design would be made and financed by the local committee and brought back to the County Board for approval before mounting. • House of Congress.
