Generating Prime/Composite Numbers Card Game
This is a game that is for two players and gives the students opportunity to practice with
prime and composite numbers. The students take turns drawing two cards and making
a 2-digit number. If the number is prime, they get 10 points, if the number is composite,
they get a 5 points. Students will take turns and record their generated numbers/points
on the recording sheet. When time is up, the student with the most points wins!
Needed for the game is a deck of cards with only ace through nines left in. The ace is
used as the number 1. Here is an example:
2 Cards Drawn
Generate a
Number
Prime or
Composite
Point Value
7 and 2
27
composite
5
With the example above, the student could have made the number 72 which is also a
composite number worth 5 points. Students will have decision making to do on which
number to generate with the two cards they draw. The goal would be to make prime
numbers since they are worth more points. Have fun playing the game!
A variation of the game can be made by randomly assigning different point levels. For
example, in game #2 if the number generated is prime they get 1 point, if the number
generated is composite they get 2 points.
See page 2 for the recording sheet.
