What "theme" associated promotions have schools found to be the most popular? (i.e.
disco, hawaiian, camo, 80's, etc.) How were they incorporated?
We have an R+B/Funk artist (James Brown style) that will be perfoming live at halftime and postgame for basketball, and we'd like to associate this with a theme to attract students.
Thank you for your suggestions...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hey Elliot,
I did a Toga party themed night at San Diego, mainly to get greeks out for a game. Now it was a
soccer doubleheader and we played the USC Trojans and Mich St Spartans, but you could still
incorporate greeks with this promotion for any sport. The members can dressed in togas and the
greek org with highest in attendance won something.
Good Luck,
Brent

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The best ones that work for us are disco, hawaiian, mardi gras night and fandomonium nights.
Disco Night: Hand out afros, beads, peace signs....all our students really get into it...plus we'll play 70's
music all night during the game
Hawaiian Night: Hand out leis and grass skirts...our mascot and cheers will be dressed in hawaiian
outfits....we'll have a limbo contest during halftime
Mardi Grad Night: Hand out tons of beads :)
Fandomonium Night: Dress in GREEN and GOLD...get as crazy as possible...it's amazing what students
will do :)
Along with all these nights....we will hand out Pizza Hut Pizza for a Year to the person who is dressed in
the best outfit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Elliot and NACMA Listserv: Step shows, hip-hop clinics, and/or student
step show competitions have been popular additions to the type of event
outlined below.
As for successful theme nights (in general) created to increase
attendance - or more specifically, group ticket sales - the
appreciation nights (teachers, nurses, armed forces, etc.) have proven
to be successful for increasing attendance and ticket revenue.
Faith and Family Night (some schools choose to do "Family Night") has
been one of the more popular themed events with college and
professional sports. Some pro teams and colleges have also held
successful "Gospel Night" events.
Black Heritage Night/Week has been popular during February and the
celebration of Black History Month. Sports and Entertainment Career
Night/Expo has been well attended, and the cheer and dance
clinics/themed events usually draw well, while also providing the
cheer/dance squads a fund-raiser, and entertaining your fans.
The traditional Scout Nights (boys and girls) continue to do well when
tickets are packaged with on-court time, a patch, food and/or post-game
(15-minute) Q&A with a coach or student-athlete. The twist is colleges
are having multiple Scout Nights versus just one annual event, and
providing two different patches/events to encourage repeat
attendance/ticket sales.
Although these are just a handful of the many themed events being
implemented, I hope they give you a new idea or two for your athletic
events. Best of luck with the rest of the season, and I hope everyone
has a safe and Happy Holidays!
All the best,
Ron
