Writing Algebraic Expressions
Sheldon Elementary School has a school store that is open every Thursday. It sells many items including folders, pencils, erasers, and novelty items. The Parent Association at the school is in charge of buying the items for the store.
1. One popular item at the store is scented pencils. The pencils come in packs of 24 from the retailer.
a. How many pencils will they have available to sell if they buy 2 packs from the retailer?
24(2) = 48
They will have 48 pencils to sell if they buy 2 packs.

b. How many pencils will they have available to sell if they buy 6
packs from the retailer?
24(6) =144
They will have 144 pencils to sell if they buy 6 packs.
c. How many pencils will they have available to sell if they buy 9
packs from the retailer?
24(9) = 216
They will have 216 pencils to sell if they buy 9 packs.
d. Write a sentence to describe how you can determine the
amount of pencils available to sell for any number of packs
purchased.
I could multiply the number of packs of pencils purchased by 24
to determine the number of pencils they will have available to
sell.

e. Write an algebraic expression that represents the total
number of pencils they will have available to sell. Let p represent
the number of packs of pencils they purchase from the
retailer.

Coefficient - the number that multiplies
the variable(s) in an algebraic term. If no
number is specified, the coefficient is 1.
In the term -3x, the coefficient is -3.
In the term y 2 , the coefficient is 1.

Variable a quantity that can change or assume different values. Also, a letter used to represent a unknown in an expression or equation.
In the statement x + 7 = y, the letters x and y are variables.

Function - a rule for using one number (an input) to
calculate another number (an output). Each input produces
only one output.
y = 3x

Order of Operations
Order of Operations the order in which the four fundamental operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) occur.
Please = Parenthesis (or a different grouping symbol)
Excuses = Exponents (square roots are exponents)
My Dear = Multiplication and/or Division (from left to right)
They are equal, start with the one on the left Aunt Sally= Addition and/or Subtraction ( from left to right)
