powers and roots.
Objectives
This chapter will show you how to

Lowest common multiples
The lowest common multiple (LCM) of two numbers is the smallest number that is a multiple of both numbers.
The lowest common
multiple is also known as
the least common multiple.
The multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, …
The multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, …
The common multiples of 3 and 4 are 12, 24, …
Another way to find LCMs is
covered in Section 10.4.
So the lowest common multiple of 3 and 4 is 12.

Write down the multiples of both numbers and circle the common multiples.
Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24 , 30, 36, 42, 48 , …
Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24 , 32, 40, 48 , …

so you can stop at 48.

Highest common factors
The highest common factor (HCF) of two numbers is the largest number that is a factor of
both numbers.
The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12.
The factors of 16 are 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16.
The common factors of 12 and 16 are 1, 2 and 4.
So the highest common factor of 12 and 16 is 4.

Write down the factors of both numbers and circle the common factors.
Remember to include 1

The common factors are 1, 2, 5 and 10.
The highest common factor is 10.

To square a number you multiply it by itself. The inverse of squaring is finding the square root.

You can write any number as a product of prime factors.
You can use a factor tree to write a number as a product of prime factors.

• The answer is the product of the prime
numbers on the branches.
