Insectsalsoneedtobeabletosensetheouterworldjustlikewedo.Theyneedtobeabletosee,sense
touch,tosmellandtaste,andsomeevenhearlikewedo.Buttheirsenseorganslookverydifferentfrom
whatweseeonahuman.
Oureyeshaveonelenstoseewith.Incontrast,adultinsectsusuallyhaveeyeswithmanylenses.Seeifany
oftheinsectsseenwiththeSEMsimulatorhavethesekindsofeyes.
Thewayinsectssensetouchisthroughstiffhairsthatstickoutfromthearmouredplates.Whenahair

onthewingsofsomebutterflies.Thecolorhelpsmalesandfemalestorecognizeoneanother.Butterflies
makethiscolorwiththeirwingscales.
Thetinyridgesandholesonthescalesbouncebackonlylightofacertaincolor.Seeifyoucanfindsome
oftheseridgesandholesinbutterflyscalesandsilverfishscales.Thebutterflyscalesareblueunder
